CONVOYS

LONDON’S DOCKS IN WAR-TIME (From Our Own Correspondent) LONDON, Mar. 8. In conection with the convoy system, the P.L.A. Monthly for March states:— “ Obviously the peacetime regular flow of shipping enables a more economical use to be made of our ports than is generally possible under the convoy svstem. On the other hand, the Port of London, by virtue of geographical circumstances and the fm’reaching developments executed during the past quarter of a century, is essentially adaptable to new conditions. “With 44 miles of deep-water quays provided within its five separate dock systems, well-chosen sites for numerous discharging and loading berths m the 50 miles of tideway between the estuary and the city and hundreds of wharves and jetties lining the river banks, it is inconceivable that congestion or serious delay could result from the arrival of the largest convoy.”
