GRANGE'S SUCCESS PREMIERSHIP WON SEASON ENDS IN STEADY RAIN It was unfortunate that rain should set in about the middle afternoon and so cause a certain amount of confusion In the final' day’s play of the Otago Cricket Association’s grade championship for the 1939-40 season. Fortunately, it had no material bearing on the outcome of the championship. The finalists were Grange and-Carisbrook A, and it was necessary for the- Carlsbrook team to beat Grange outright to depose it from the top of the list. The first day’s play was so overwhelmingly in. favour of Grange that Carlsbrook A really had no chance of winning outright, and the result, a firstinnings win for Grange, merely increased Grange’s fnargin of points. .... The final state of the championship is •s follows; Pts. Grange • • • • 30 •Carlsbrook A 44 Dunedin «7 Kaikoral • • • • 32 Old Boys .. ... •• •• 28 University 28 Carlsbrook B .. .. .. 24 Albion .. .. 21 Grange was definitely the superior side in the final. On the first day.it scored 288 and it proceeded to dismiss Carisbrook for 1143. The latter side was required to follow on, but had lost no wickets for 35 ruris when rain put an end to play. H. Cameron, who scored 54 and 27 not out, was the only Carisbrook batsman to produce true form. Dunedin was unlucky in its match againgst Kaikorai that it did not have time to overhaul the hill side’s total of 264. It had scored 167 for only one wicket, Macassey being unbeaten with 77, when the game ended, so that the result was a draw University had not made a good start towards catching Old Boys’ first innings score, of 172, but the middle batsmen came to the- rescue and the- board showed 215 ■- for five wickets (Baker 49 not out, Rennie 65 not out) when play was stopped. The Carisbrook B-Alblon match was a low-scoring one, and Carisbrook B won on the first innings. It scored 105 and 122 (Silver six wickets for 44 runs), and Albion’s scoring was 73 and 83 for one wicket. When play stopped finally at Carisbrook, the i Grange team was congratulated on its successful season by Mr Crosby Morris, president of the Carisbrook Club. The congratulations were acknowledged by the captain of the Grange side. N. Henderson!

CARISBROOK DEFEATED GRANGE WINS ON FIRST INNINGS At the conclusion of play last Saturday fortnight Grange had scored 288 runs and Carisbrook A had lost three Wickets for 54 (H. Cameron not out 35 and McKay not out 5). Cameron carried his score to 54, and the wickets fell rapidly till the last man in, Walsh, joined Hercus. At that stage Carisbrook had lost nine wickets for 105. but the last-named pair

raised the score to 143 before Hercus was well caught by Frew. Carisbrook were sent In again at 10 minutes past 3, but rain commenced to fall shortly afterwards, and as at 25 minutes to 5 the weather showed no signs of Improvement stumps were drawn. Grange won on the first innings. Details - GRANGE

DUNEDIN UNFORTUNATE DRAW WITH KAIKORAi Had rain which commenced to fall shortly before 4 o’clock not prevented further' play, Dunedin had better than an even chance of winding up the season with a five-point win over Kaikorai. Kaikorai’s first, innings total was 264. and at the close of the first day's play Dunedin had 47 on without the loss of a wicket. Robertson, one of the not-out batsmen, notified that he would be late in arriving on Saturday, but the Kaikorai skipper, McGregor, consented to his batting further down the list, and his place was taken by Tobin. With the wicket at Tonga Park in perfect order, Macassey, whose overnight score was 16, and Tobin soon got going, and runs came quickly Tobin had 18 to his credit v/hen he was clean bowled by Boock, but McDonald Joined Macassey, and this pair collared the bowling, so thoroughly that Dunedin, with nine wickets still in hand, wanted only 97 runs to win when stumps were drawn Macassey’s score of 77 was a bright effort, but he gave two chances, and McDonald batted aggressively for his 32. WIN FOR UNIVERSITY FINE SIXTH WICKET STAND The game at Logan Park between University and Old Boys, before it was stopped by the rain, resulted in a flrstinnings win by University by a substantial margin. In spite of a rather inauspicious start to University’s innings. On the first day Old Boys made 172, and on Saturday University, with five wickets down for 108, looked like having a hard struggle to reach the, required acore. When Rennie joined Baker at me wickets, however, the whole complexion of the game was changed; and, although

these (wo did not play altogether chancelessly, their vigorous batting added another 107 runs to University’s total before rain brought the game to a close. Leader was the most successful bowler, taking two wickets for 34. CARISBROOK B WINS LOW-SCORING MATCH The second day of the Carisbrook BAlbion match at Logan Park was comparatively uneventful. Carisbrook B continued its second innings with a total lead of 80 runs and all of its wickets intact, but once again the batsmen of the side failed. Talbot scored a breezy 39, but the last wicket fell at 122. Albion had plenty of time to score 165 runs for an outright win. Silver and Allan had bowled steadily and most of the Carisbrook batsmen got themselves out. It began to rain when Albion commenced its second innings, and loose bowling gave Sinclair and Miller a flying start. Every attempt was made to play out the afternoon, but, after several adjournments, stumps were drawn with the score 83 for one wicket. Carisbrook B thus won on the first innings. - Details;— CARISBROOK B 1 First innings 105 Second Innings Cavanagh, b Allan .. • • 3j Carter, b Silver ~ ...•••■ •• .
