CENTENNIAL TOURNAMENT THIRTY-FOUR TEAMS PARTICIPATE (Per United Press Association) WELLINGTON, Mar. 23. Some 400 girls from all parts of New Zealand are taking part in the New Zealand centennial basketball tournament, which was commenced at Wellington ' to-day in ideal weather. Twenty-two senior and 12 school teams are competing, and to-day’s standard of play was surprisingly high considering the fact that the tournament is taking place so early in the season. Two surprises were recorded during the afternoon in the defeat of Wellington, the co-holders of the senior trophy with Auckland, by the Hawke’s Bay team, and also the defeat of Waikato, the holders of the Second Grade trophy, by Ashburton. The tournament was officially opened by the Mayoress (Mrs T. C. A, Hislop), and visiting players were welcomed to Wellington by Miss O. Wharton, the president of the Wellington Association. A spectacular parade of the teams participating followed. Results:— Secondary Schools’ Section Wait ah i Girls’ High 15 v. Wellington East 8. Palmerston North 24 v. Taihape 4. New Plymouth High 29 v.
