NOTES ON THE~RACING HORSE POWER’S IMPROVED FORM (Special to Daily Times) CHRISTCHURCH. Mar. 23. There was a large crowd for the first day of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s meeting, and with the Addington track in great order, the racing was very good. Preliminary Handicap Several horses failed to go off well In ; the Preliminary Handicap, among them, the second fancy, Millisle, who tangled early and drifted out of the contest. Bush Laddie, a well-backed fancy, went off smartly, and was in front after three furlongs. ;He never relinquished his lead, and won decisively. He is a four-year-old by Wrack, and he is on the way to the best trotting class. Anna_s Voyage, the early leader, broke after half a mile, and after that made ■ another skip. Premier, Houghton Feast, and Dollad Maid followed Bush Laddie with half the journey gone, but Dollar Maid broke along the back, where Escalado and Reception moved up. Premier faded out in the run home, and Houghton Feast stalled Off Reception, with Escalado close up, while Shadeland put in a late dash to be fifth. Fendalton Handicap ; Ochiltree and Treasure Bond lost ground at the start of. the Fendalton Handicap, while Passport broke soon after the start. Aldershot, soon drew clear of Replica, who had Kilrea, Privateer, Battlevale, - and Lady Milne in close attendance after half, a mile. Replica broke a fur-: lorig farther on, half the field meeting serious interference. Along the back Aldershot was just clear of Kilrea, Battlevale, and Black Surprise, with Lady Milne, Privateer, and Passport next. Black Surprise took second place along the back, followed by Kilrea. who broke a little farther .on. Aldershot was beaten at the homo--turn. Black Surprise led to the straight, but then faded out quickly, leaving Battlevale in charge, but Privateer staged a good finishing run on the rails to win by a neck. Three lengths back, Ochiltree came home strongly In third place, a good performance, as she had a lot of ground to make up after going off slowly and then getting into the mix-up. Black Surprise, a warm favourite, disappointed by failing to stay. Privateer’s was a solid effort, and he looks oh the way to more money. Express Handicap The Express Handicap was a good race, the field being in close order most of the way. - Loyal Rey began slowly. Accountant led out, Quest heading Red Pigeon and Harold Guy after a furlong. Dusky Sound, then moved up and was third at the end of half a mile, with Red Pigeon, Harold Guy and Roan Duke handy. Loyal Rey made a move half a mile from home, but still had some ground to make up at the home turn, where Accountant had Red Pigeon, Harold Guy and Cruiser as his nearest attendants. Red Pigeon, was in front nearly a furlong from the post, and stalled off Cruiser’s challenge by a length. ; Accountant, another length bach, just # lastedlong. enough to beat Loyal Rey, who came- home fast. .• Red Pigeon has ;been wonderfully-,;.consistent this! season- and

her latest was a solid performance. Xt was her second win, while she has been placed in eight other races. Accountant did not quite run the journey out. Loyal Rey lost his chance when he went off slowly. Dusky Sound had to cover a lot of ground and failed to stay, which was no surprise. Easter Handicap Horsepower gave further evidence of his much improved form when he won the Easter Handicap. It was his fifth success of the season and he is on the way to ’still better class. Southern Chief and Great Jewel tangled at the start, interfering with Plutus, these three having no phance. Renown’s Best took charge quickly from Horsepower and War Buoy, with Marsceres, Fine Art and Pot Luck following, while Plutus was only a few lengths back at the end of six furlongs There was no change at the home turn, where Horsepower moved up. leading Renown’s Best to the straight, while Marsceres and Pot Luck were closing up The last-named pair soon had the measure of Renown’s Best, and Marsceres finished with a great run. Horsepower beating him by’ only a head. Pot Luck was a length away, and Renown’s Best close up, the others following at intervals. Fine Art was a disappointment Belfast Handicap The Belfast Handicap was a hard race for backers, as Bill 8.. Marlene and Lightning Lady all failed badly. Sandusky was smartest out and was never caught, winning decisively. He was having his first start since he joined R, B. Berry s stable, after being trained for some time In Auckland, and it was an overdue win, as he had not been successful for more than a year. Silver Guy, Red Ranger, Bill 8.. and Nell Grattan followed the leader in that order till half a mile from home. Bill B„ then started a run, but did not carry on, being quickly beaten. Red, Ranger and Nell Grattan followed Sandusky' to the straight, where Toorak started a run on the rails. They staged a great battle for the places. Toorak getting up to beat Nell Grattan by a head, with Red Ranger another head away Toorak, one of the most consistent horses In training, has had one win and six places this season. Autumn Handicap There was an exciting finish for the Autumn Handicap between the three placed horses, but there was a long gap to the others. Aristotle. and Gerfalcon broke soon, aftei the start; Mohican and Franz Derby led out from Grade Fields and Tan John, but after half a mile Gracie Fields took charge, Tim worthy running into second place, and Franz Derby, Tan John, and Mohican handy, while Gerfalcon headed the others. Franz Derby broke a little further on. There was not much change at the mile post, where Pilot Peter was making'up ground fast, after losing about 40 yards at the start. Grade Fields broke half a mile from hime, Timworthy going on with Pilot Peter in close attendance, while .Tan John, Mohican, and Gerfalcon were next. Timworthy led to the straight, but was soon beaten. Tan John, Mohican and Pilot Peter then settled down to a great; struggle. Pilot Peter beating Mohican by a head, with Tan John a head away. There was a gap to Gerfalcon, who headed the others. The win of Pilot Peter was no surprise to Addington track watchers, as he had done some great work lately. Considering the ground he lost at the start, his performance was outstanding. Wilkin Handicap Worthy Need and Slippery Sam broke at the start of the Wilkin Handicap. Connenora led out from Sports Review, while after two furlongs Treasure Bond. Proletarian and Attain were handy. Sports Review went to the front a little farther on. Great Don then moved up, and at the end of six furlongs he headed Sports Review. with Attain, Connenora, and Ochiltree next. Slippery Sam moved up fast along the back and three furlongs from home Great Don'was closely followed by Attain, with Slippery Sam, Ochiltree; and Sports Review next. Attain headed Great Don into the straight, but had to be driven out to win by a neck from Slippery Sam, who came home very fast. Great Don was close up, with a gap to Worthy Need, who headed the bunch; This was the second win of the season for Attain, a smart and improving pacer. Slippery Sam put up a great effort after his mistake at the start, and he was unlucky to be beaten. Ochiltree had a sulky wheel damaged about a furlong from home, and was pulled up. Oxford Handicap Repeal soon took charge from Mankind in the Oxford Handicap, with Aqua-Bond, Donor and Wee Potts handy. The order was unchanged after half ,a mile, where Navy Blue and Token headed the others. Aqua Bond was in second place along Hie back, but he retired at the home turn Repeal led Mankind, Token, Wee Potts and Donor to the straight, with Subsidy moving up on the Tails. Donor was in front a furlong from the post, and went on to stall off Wee Potts by two lengths, while Subsidy, a length away, beat the tiring Mankind by half a length. Token failed in the run home. Loyal Rey, a pronounced favourite, began slowly, and was never prominent, while Bayard was another favoured candidate > who failed badly. MEETING THE FIELDS FOR TO-DAY Opinions In connection with the Canterbury Jockey Club’s autumn meeting cover a wide field about the Great Easter and Great Autumn. It is generally recognised that a solution of the Easter and Autumn double is a particularly puzzling problem for those endeavouring to anticipate the judge’s placings in the principal events to be decided at Riccarton. The Great Easter Handicap is regarded as very open, although it has not attracted a particularly strong field from a numerical point of view. Those most in favour are Density, Not Out, Spanish Lad. Nightcalm, and Duncannon. and in fact, about half the field are in about equal favour. It is sure to be a hard run race with the pace on all the way. Density will carry the field along, and with Spanish Lad and Nightcalm, may be selected to fill the places. Last year Density finished a close second in record time for the race. Sovereign Lady, Capricious and Trench Law may be most in demand for the Great Autumn Handicap. The following may be in favour:— Kildare Hurdles.—Roseman, Esperance Bay. Champagne Stakes.—Shikari, Doria. Chary. Courtney Handicap.—Stylist, Indian Sun, Princess Minerva. Autumn Plate.—Night Pal, Hearth, Scold. Great Easter Handicap.—Density. Nightcalm, Spanish Lad, or Alma. Russley Handicap. Retrogression, Atreus, Cherry Bay. Sockburn Handicap.—Capricious, Trench Law, Swordstck. The fields are as follows: 22 2 KILDARE HURDLE HANDICAP, Of £3OO. FINAL GALLOPS SMART TRIALS AT RICCARTON (Special to Daily Times) CHRISTCHURCH, Mar. 23. The weather was fine for the final gallops at Riccarton this rooming. The outside of the course proper attracted a few of the trainers, but. most of the work was done on the plough. There were some interesting trials, a five-furlong spin by Density being outstanding, while Duncannon, Nightcalm. and Disdain were the Great Easter candidates‘who went well over six furlongs. Sovereign Lady was given an easy run. She is in great order. Rakahanga, after giving Omapo a start, beat him by four lengths over, six furlongs. She reeled off the first three in 36sec, but took Imin 16 3-ssec for the full journey. On the plough, Night Glass ran five furlongs in Imin 3 2-ssec, a performance which Shikari equalled, while Dorla easily beat Pleading in the same time. Indian Sun took Imin 4 2-ssec. Nightdress and Lord Midas went over the same ground in Imin 2 3-ssec, after doing the first two furlongs in 24 2-ssec. This was a good effort. BEAUMONT MEETING The form displayed at the Lawrence meeting will probably shed quite a lot of light on possibilities at the Beaumont Racing Club’s meeting, as quite a number of horses are engaged at both fixtures. The Beaumont card will contain some new blood and also provide a change of track conditions which may have a material effect on results. The following may be amongst the popular selections during the day:— Roxburgh Trial Handicap.—Homing, Our Empire, Lady Don. Dunkeld Handicap Trot. —Polling Day, Coastline, Woolwich. Easter Handicap.—Sir Hugh, Auctor, Ashaway. President’s Handicap.—Queen Beth, Mlltlades. Pink Dress. Jubilee Champion Hack Handicap.—Aravane, Combat. Silkwood. DONCASTER HANDICAP MILDURA BEATS BEAULIVRE ST. LEGER TO READING (United Press Association) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) SYDNEY, Mar. 24. (Received Mar. 24, at 8 p.m.) The opening day of the A.J.C. autumn meeting to-day was favoured with fine, sunny weather, and there was good racing. Beaulivre stripped beautifully for the Doncaster Handicap, but was in need of a race. He beat all but the Newmarket winner Mildura, who happened to bs at the top of his form. High Caste was allowed to run, and the public made him a most popular choice. He shaped poorly, apparently feeling the effects of his long campaign. The Victorian Lucrative ran away with the Sires’ Produce Stakes. Maikai won the Autumn Plate so impressively that his prospects for the Sydney Cup look rosy. Reading has now joined the select band of three-year-olds who have won two Derbies and two Legers. The attendance was estimated at 55,000. Following are the results:— HURDLE HANDICAP, Of £SOO About two miles. Jack Mac, Messrs Bowser and Cusick’s b g, by Scintillation —Specs, syrs, 10.7 (Hynes) .. .. 1 Mag Mort, 9.4 (Brace) 2 Spearbinc, 11.13 (Hood) 3 Ten started. Wlnterbottom’s br g, by Pantheon—Oreum, 6yrs, 9.0 .. .. 1 Mosaic, 9.0 (Munro) 2 Old Rowley, 9.0 (Badger) 3 Scratched: Fearless, Dashing Cavalier. The five runners, with Old RoWley in the lead, took things easily over the first mile, when Mosaic and Maikai closed on the leader, and the pace was applied. Royal Chief attempted to get up at the turn into the straight, but was beaten off, and Mosaic and Maikai staged a neck-and-neck battle along the straight, Maikai gaining the verdict by a head. Old Rowley was two lengths and a-half away third and Royal Chief a close fourth. St. Constant was last Time. 2min 34Jsec. VAUCLUSE HANDICAP, Of £7OO. Seven furlongs. First Division Mitsui, C, M. Beaullvre was always near the front from the barrier rise, and was closely attended by Mildura and The Albatross. Mildura moved up at the home turn, where Beaulivre shot into the lead and looked very dangerous. Mildura, desperately ridden, overtook the New Zealander at the distance, and, finishing strongly, won by three-quarters of a length, with half a length between* second and third; Cherry Bar was fourth, and then came Denis and Rodborough. High Caste was in the picture for half a mile, but then faded out. Gold Salute ran a disappointing race. A.J.C. SIRES’ PRODUCE STAKES, Of £3500. Seven furlongs. Lucrative, Messrs Levin and McLean’s b c, by Gay Lothario—Balkan Star, 2yrs, 8.10 (McCarten) 1 Pandect, 8.10 (Badger) 2 Trueness, 8.7 (Bartle) .. 3 Ten started, including Patrician and Beauregard.
