QUEENSTOWN REGATTA

A SUCCESSFUL FIXTURE \ QUEEN’S DRIVE CLUB’S SUCCESS AWARUA SECOND IN AGGREGATE (Special to Daily Times) QUEENSTOWN, March 23. The Queenstown regatta, which was held to-day, is as popular as ever. The entries were all well up, and big crowds lined the shores of the bay to witness the racing. The weather was good, but the water was variable, with better conditions prevailing in the afternoon. The racing was interesting, the standard of oarsmanship being good. The only hitch in .'a well-ordered regatta was the fouling of the North End boat and Riverton. ■ The Mackenzie Cup for the highest aggregate points was , won by Queen’s Drive, with 18 points. Awarua, 17 points, was next, and North End, 15 points, third. The prize money was divided as follows: Invercargill Railway, £2l; Queen’s Drive, £l7 10s; Aarua, £l7; North End, £ll 10s; Port Chalmers and Riverton, £3 10s each. The starter was Mr W. Awarua B was first in the lead, with Port Chalmers handy. Both crews were doing 36 to the minute. The two Bluff crews were on even terms after a quarter of a mile, shortly after which the No. 3 stretcher in the A host gave trouble, and the boat stopped. Railway went into the lead at halfway, and a ding-dong race took place between Awarua and Rsilway The latter, however, rattled on the pace in the concluding stages and won by five lengths, a touch separating the second and third hosts. Invercargill Railway, Invercargill, Awarua B end Queen’s Drive also started. All the crews raced in line for a short distance, Riverton being the first to show out. with the two North End crews in attendance. Trouble developed in the North End B boat and it fell back. Awarua challenged the leaders and went into first place. In a great finish Awarua won by half a canvas, with Riverton close up third. Time. Cmin 40sec. Junior Pairs First, £3 10s; second, £l. Riverton fouled the North End boat, but the latter restarted and gamely made up a lot of leeway.
