LAWN TENNIS

EASTER TOURNAMENT SOME MAJOR UPSETS WOMEN'S SINGLES FINALISTS DECIDED Although the weather was cold and boisterous for the first day's play in the Otago Law:: Tennis Association's Easter tournament, almost record progress was made, and over 120 matches were played before darkness set in. The controllers of the tournament concentrated on Singles events and practically all of these were advanced to satisfactory stages. Entries, with the exception of the Women's Single/ Championship, were good, and players from the North Island to Invercargill took part. Interest centred chiefly on the Men's Singles Championship, and there were several major upsets to add spice to an interesting day's tennis. J. McClean, a young Invercargiil player of decided promise, who has twice won the Southland Boys' Championship and is also a good track athlete, caused the chief surprise of the day when he accounted for G. A. Pearce (Wellington) in a match that was full of interest. Pearce took the first set 3—7, but did not look to be happy on the court, and the Southlander fought gamely and at times brilliancy to take the next set 6—4. He continued to. play firstclass tennis in the third set, and clinched the match 7—9, 6—4, t> —4, after a meritorious display against an experienced and . clever player. McClean entered the third round by defeating A. Miller 6—3, 6—4. G. Laidlaw showed what an improved player he is by defeating the veteran W. Bray with an almost equally comfortable win over E. S. Falconer.

Another big surprise in the Men's Singles was the defeat of S. Leask at the hands of a steady and improving Southland player, I Shand, to the tune of 6—l, 6—o. Shand met his master in the next round, however, when he ecountered B. J. Kelly, a stylish Wellington player, who won an interesting game 7—5, 2—6, 6—l. B. Whelan, Southland's first string, was in good form and entered the third round by accounting for R. Sincock in straight sets. Another Southlander who created a deep impression was F. Lindsay, a son of the well-known Winton player, G. Lindsay. Despite a physical disability, the Southlander played sterling tennis against J. C. Robertson, Otago's No. 1 player, following a sound win over T. C. Smith. Lindsay took the first set from Robertson, who was fully extended to win 4—6. 6—4 6—3. The veteran S. G. McDougall, a winner of many southern tournaments, showed that he still has considerable ability on the court by outclassing E A. Pearce, who could secure only ' two games. K. Bryan, another player from North Otago, who might be regarded as the favourite for the Singles title, .easily accounted for the promising J. W. Paterson in the first *round; and. by defeating T. McGrath after a hard first set 7—5. 6—3, will meet McDougall. Only eight entries were received for the Women's Singles Championship, and of these Miss D Miller (North Otago) and Miss R. Wilson (Southland) were outstanding. Although both lost only five games apiece in their matches, they were given fairly strong opposition in the second round. Miss M. Kerr played an attacking game to great advantage in her Singles against Miss Miller and put up a great fight, although the score of 6—2. 6—2 would indicate that the North Otago player had an easy win. Miss M. Jolly also played sound tennis against Miss Wilson, but could not match the fast, brilliant play of the southerner in the second set. The final between Miss Miller and Miss Wilson should be well worth watching if Miss Wilson elects to play an attacking game from the outset. -

Several promising players took part in the Boys' and , Girls' Singles Championships, and some interesting matches were witnessed in the handicap events. The tournament will be continued to-day:— The following are yesterday's results: —
