SOLDIERS ENTERTAINED MEMBERS OF SECOND ECHELON DINNER BY HARBOUR BOARD Men of the second echelon of the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force were entertained at a dinner tendered by the Oamaru Harbour Board in the Queen's Hotel on Wednesday night. Mr R. K. Ireland (chairman of the Harbour Board) presided, and with him were associated Messrs A. H. Nordmeyer, M.P., L. J. K. Familton (Mayor), J. C. Kirkness (deputy mayor), J. Rodman (chairman of the Waitaki County Council), R. K. Gardiner (county clerk), and J. Branthwaita (town clerk). Approximately 25 soldiers were present, including Stoker Maurice, of H.M.S. Achilles, as well as members of the Oamaru Harbour Board, members of the Town and County Councils, and returned soldiers.

The chairman extended a welcome to the members of the second echelon and to Stoker Maurice. The Mayor (Mr L. J. K. Familton) said that when the Borough Council had approached the Harbour Board to give the function it had been only too pleased to conform with the suggestion. The men, by the very fact that they were in uniform, showed a fine example of patriotism. The average New Zealander did not like fighting, but when the time came he was only too willing to take up arms to defend his rights. Mr James Rodman considered it an honour to be among so many men in khaki. All appreciated the fact that the men had volunteered.

Mr C. J. Mollison, on behalf of the Returned Soldiers' Association, congratulated the men on enlisting. He was sure they would uphold the fine name and traditions of Anzac. Mr A. H. Nordmeyer, M.P., said that the men, in the light of their own conscience had enlisted in the defence of the Mother Country. New Zealand was proud of them as New Zealand soldiers, and was sure that they would uphold the traditions of New Zealand soldiers.

Replying, Second-lieutenant R. M. S. Orbell assured the gathering that the men of the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force were every bit as tough as the men of Anzac. Stoker Maurice returned thanks to the Harbour Board, on behalf of the Navy, for the splendid reception he had been given.

At the conclusion of the function gift parcels were distributed to the soldiers from the ladies of North Otago and Captain Godwin.

Otekaifce Bridge A deputation from the Kurow and Upper Waitaki district, consisting of Mr A. C. J. Robinson and the Rev. J. M. Bates, waited on the council regarding the state of the Otekaike bridge. A petition, signed by over 100 residents, was presented to the council. The deputation stated that if the Otekaike bridge was demolished, it would cause an inconvenience to the travelling public and farmers alike, who used the bridge, as they would have to make a detour, adding another seven miles to the journey. Mr Rodman stated that the bridge had been deemed unsafe by both the county and Public Works engineers. Owing to the shortage of materials, it was out of the question to replace the bridge with a new one. and it would cost roughly about £3OO to repair the bridge. It was also stated by the deputation that the hours of working of the water pump at Kurow were not long enough to cope with the supply needed. They suggested day working, but the chairman stated that if dav working was introduced new equipment would have to be installed, and that meant extra expenditure. Tour of Inspection

KINEMA ENTERTAINMENT! MAJESTIC THEATRE "Bachelor Mother" Heralded by advance preview reports as one of the season's most sprightly and original .. comedy romances, "Bachelor Mother" will meke its local debut at the Majestic Theatre to-night, with Ginger Rogers and David Niven in the stellar roles. Miss Rogers in the role of a department store sales girl displays her flair for comedy which she recently em; ployed in " Vivacious Lady" and " Stage Door." Niven's characterisation as an adamant store executive is a refreshing departure from his roles in " Wuthering Heights" and " Dawn Patrol." An hilarious mix-up over a baby forms the axis round which "Bachelor Mother" revolves. Holding a temporary job in the store during the Christni's rush. Miss Rogers—in her lunch hour —finds an..infant on the steps of a foundling home, and is instantly mistaken for the child's mother. The more Ginger protests the more she is disbelieved, and the home authorities report the matter to the store executives. Niven. a vice-presi-dent and the son of the store's owner, investigates for himself, and he, too, is convinced that Ginger is the mother. He immediately shifts her to the permanent staff and gives her a rise. This only infuriates Ginger, who is at her wits' end to shift the care of the child to others with hilarious consequences for all concerned. Plans are at the theatre.
