CITY COUNCIL
FORTNIGHTLY MEETING The fortnightly meeting of the City Council was held last night. The Mayor, Mr A. H. Allen, presided, and there were also present Crs D. C. Cameron W. H. Borrie. D. G. McMillan. M.P. J. Wilson. M. C. Henderson. R Walls, J. W. Munro. M.P., J. McCrae, H. L. Gibson. W. B. Taverner. E J. Smith, and P. G. Connolly. Library Committee
The Library Committee recommended that the tender of Mr J. A. Orlowski. in the sum of £3OO. for the necessary work required in improving the main entrance to the Public Library, be accepted. The tender recommended was the lowest of five tenders received. The work proposed consisted of the removal of the existing doorways and replacement with new doors, the erection of a new issue desk at the entrance, and the provision of additional shelving in various parts of the Library. There had been no special provision made for this expenditure. but owing to the inability of the department to complete the whole of its overseas book buying, the cost would be found from the current vear’s allocations. The report was adopted. Gas Committee
The Gas Committee reported that, owing to the irregularity of shipments of Newcastle coal, the Gas Department been faced with the necessity of handling this coal by hand which method was proving very costly An extension of the existing telpher plant would obviate this, and the committee recommended that the quotation of Messrs A. D. Riley and Co., Ltd., as agents for Messrs Herbert Morris. Ltd of England, the makers of the existing plant, for the supply of the necessarv material to extend it. in the sum of £469, be accepted. The report was adopted. Reports Adopted
Reports of the various other committees were adopted after discussion.
