THE FLAG DAY APPEAL
TO THE EDITOR Sir. —I read in your, paper of Saturday last that one stallholder reported “ that until conscription was brought in ” a large number of persons refused to contribute. I consider this is a very mean act. Why should these people refuse to contribute towards the purchase of comforts for the brave boys who have already enlisted just because the Government, has net yet seen fit to introduce conscription? I could see the , sense in their refusal if they had refused to contribute towards comforts for those who will not enlist. My husband is a returned soldier. I have a son in camp with the second echelon and a son-in-law in the R.N.V.R. We are all in favour of conscription here. Nevertheless, we gladly contributed our humble 3s towards the appeal, and are extremely sorry we could not afford more, as we have a large family at school. I trust these people will contribute extra next time an appeal is made, for, as I have already stated, the volunteers already away should not be deprived of their comforts simply because conscription has not been introduced.—l am. etc., February 12. Mother of Eleven,
