ALEXANDRA

Centennial Memorial

The citizens of Alexandra decided last May to have as their centennial memorial a pavilion and grand stand in the recreation ground, to cdst £ 1300. The appeal for finance was to have taken the form of a queen carnival. It was. however, considered that the war was the first consideration, and a public meeting was held on Friday evening. The Mayor (Mr W. Bringans) presided and explained the position. stating that it was considered inopportune at present to endeavour to raise such a sum when money was required to further war aims. He asked for a general expression of opinion as to alternative proposals, and it was eventually decided to recommend to the Borough Council that a centennial avenue of trees should be planted in Crookhaven street and that the name of the street be altered to Centennial avenue. It was also suggested that trees should be planted in Tarbert street. A suggestion that a centennial park should be constructed near the railway station was defeated. Patriotic Committee

The Mayor (Mr W. Brlngans) presided over a large attendance on Friday evening, when the forming of a Patriotic Committee was discussed. A cqmmittee was eventually formed, with the Mayor as chairman the main function of the committee at present, being the arranging of socials to soldiers. Considerable discussion took place as to the type of help which was to be given, the women present expressing the opinion that they should be able to sew and knit for the men who had enlisted locally instead of their efforts being placed in a common pool. It was decided to write to the authorities suggesting that the policy proposed be reconsidered. Personal
