MOSGIEL BOROUGH COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the Mosgiel Borough Council, held last night, was presided over by the Mayor (Mr W. P. Hartstonge), and Crs H. C. Connor, G. A. Smith, J. S. Blackie, W. P. Dyer, and J. F. McCartney were present. Correspondence The city electrical engineer’s office, Dunedin, gave authority to paint pedestrian crossing signs on electric light poles where required.—Noted. The secretary, of the Municipal Association notified that the municipal conference would be held in Wellington on March 5 to 9.—Received. Tin Vincent County Council asked for support towards the erection of the Haast Pass Memorial Cairn—Received. The Otago Centre, Amateur Athletic Association, in a letter concerning the evening meeting held recently on the recreation ground, Mosgiel, said that the members who had inspected the ground prior to the meeting reported that the ground and the manner in which it had been marked out had left nothing to be desired, and the centre thanked those officers who had been responsible for the work. —The Mayor endorsed the statements in the letter, and said it was a well-merited testimony to the work of the chairman of reserves (Cr McCartney). An application from several residents of Wingatui road for a reduction in the scale of extraordinary water charges was declined. Outstanding Rates The clerk was instructed as to the collection of all outstanding rates in view of the approaching close of the financial year. Coronation Hall The letting of the Coronation Hall to the Taieri Horticultural Society on March 1 and 2 for the autumn show and to the Oddfellows’ Lodge on April 5 and 6 for lodge functions, was authorisGd. A report was tabled concerning the breaking of a window in Coronation Hall. The police were investigating the matter.—lt was resolved to place wire covering over the windows, details being left to the foreman. General In connection with the registration of dogs, it was decided that an extra shilling be added for hydatids remedy. The borough office was appointed as the place for the registration of dogs. The chairman of the Works Committee notified that the utilisation of scheme 13 labour for a further month on loan works had been authorised by the Labour Department.—Noted. The chairman of the Reserves Committee mentioned that on occasions when the Recreation Ground was used for functions for which an admission charge was made, persons had been observed obtaining access to the Recreation Ground through the tennis courts. In order to prevent a recurrence, the chairman was authorised to arrange for the gate between the tennis courts and the Recreation Ground to be permanently closed up. The clerk reported that since the last meeting of the committee at the end of November, nine building permits had been issued, the value of the work involved being £12,351. It was decided that men from Mosgiel proceeding on active service be tendered an afternoon tea before finally leaving the district.
