AUSTRALIAN SOCIETY SOCIAL
With green and yellow streamers and the Australian Mag adorning the wall, the Strand Salon presented a bright setting on Saturday night for the final social evening of the season of the Australian Society. The decision of the committee to make this function a fancy dress one was fully justified, many beautiful and novel costumes being worn. Prizes for the best costumes were won by Mesdames Calvert and Newall and Messrs J Cunningham and G, Edwards. Mr A. A. Paape (president) extended a welcome to recent arrivals from the Commonwealth —Miss Williams (Adelaide), Miss Vaughan (Brisbane), and Mr Maskell (Perth), and in expressing the appreciation of the society to Mrs E. Clayton for her valuable services as pianist presented her with a bedroom clock. Mr and Mrs W. Stewart were the winners of the Monte Carlo novelty dance. Those who contributed to an enjoyable programme arranged by Mr A. Walmsley were; Miss Pita Proctor (songs), Messrs Finney and McKinlay (vocal duet), Miss Elsie Kirkham humorous numbers, and Miss A Wheeler (tap dancing). Mrs A. Walmsley acted as accompanist, and Mrs E. Clayton supplied the music for dancing. On the motion of Mr Paape. a hearty vote of thanks was accorded the performers. after which Miss Holland contributed the Frenchman's toast Those present included: Mesdames Newall, Edwards.
