Miss Margaret Annan, who has been visiting Dunedin as the guest of Mrs E. R. Nevill and of Mrs Jeffrey Barnett, has returned to Clyde.

An enjoyable five o clock party was given on Tuesday by Miss Pat Miles at her home in Queen street, the guest of honour being Miss Molly Runnerstrum.

The Dunback Ladies’ Croquet Club held its opening day on Saturday last. Mrs Kelly made the first hoop, and with a few suitable remarks, declared the green open.

The members of the Young Helpers' League were entertained by Mrs J. Chapman at “ The Grange,” Dunback, for the annual box-opening. This movement, which was begun in Dunback nine years ago by Mrs Chapman, as president, and by Mrs Brownlie, as secretary, is still being carried on by these two members and the young people with continued interest and success

An enjoyable partv was given recently by Mr and Mrs A Innes, of Macrae’s Flat the occasion being the coming-of-age of their eldest son Douglas. The evening was spent in dancing, interspersed with a tap dance by Miss P. Fraser and a duet by Miss I. Ockwell and Mr A. Ockwell The toast of the guest of honour was proposed by Mr M. O’Connell. The annual dinner in the Timaru High School Old Girls’ Association was held in the Tudor Hall of the Savoy on Saturday last. The school colours, blue and silver, were carried out in the flowers and table decorations. A duet by Miss Jean Waldie and Miss Joyce Buckley and a solo by Miss Jean Waldie were much enjoyed. Miss P Jones (president) received the guests, the visitors being: Miss Hurle (principal of the Timaru Girls’ High School). Misses Young, Martin. Members of the Austral-Girton Club assembled in the Somerset Lounge recently to hold their annual reunion. This proved to be a happy function, and the members of the Park family who were responsible for the programme are to be warmly congratulated on its undoubted success. To open the proceedings Miss E. Owen (vice-president) presented Miss F. J. Ross (president) with a bouquet and spray of flowers. A welcome was extended to Miss V. Logan, who had recently returned from a trip abroad, and to Mrs Ritchie Crawford, of Invercargill. who had made a special effort to •be present.- Mis s Ross reviewed the year’s activities and referred briefly to world conditions The programme was as follows;—New Zealand hvmn: pianoforte duet. “Anitra’s Dance,” by Mrs P. Park; recitation by Mrs Gale of “ Dunedin from the Bay competition; piano duet. “ Schubert’s March, bv Mrs P. Dick and Miss J Jones.

. .The Civic Circle of the Otago Women’s Club held its monthly meeting on Wednesday last, when Miss Applegarth, lady district superintendept of Otago for the St. John Ambulance Association, was the speaker for the afternoon Miss Applegarth gave a brief outline of the. origin of the association’s work from the time of the monk. Gerard in Jerusalem to the founding of the Order in England in 1831, and in New Zealand in 1885. and ended with an account of the work being done here in Dunedin, She mentioned the classes for training people in first aid and in home nursing: the work of the Ladies’ Sewing Guild, and the work of the three district nurses and of the Hospital hostess, all of whom are supported by the St. John Association .She told also of the blood transfusion helpers, and of the transport work done bv the ambulance motors Members of the brigade were always on duty at any big gathering and at all sports meetings said Miss Applegarth who also snoke of the work which the Hillside Brigade does in attending accidents at the workshops. Now she said, classes in A.R.P work were being held. These were largely attended owing to the impetus given by war conditions. After Miss Applegarth had answered numerous questions. Mrs Hill proposed a hearty vote of thanks to the sneaker for her talk, in which all had been so keenly interested.

The October meeting of the Kuriwao Institute was presided over by Mrs Livingstone. One new member was elected. Mrs A. Harris gave an interesting talk oh. her visit to Holland during the institute party’s trip overseas. Gifts were received for the lepers. The competitions resulted: —Bloom —Mrs H. McDonald 1, Mrs A Harris 2, Mrs J. Morrison 3; costume —Mrs D. Livingstone and Mrs J. Harris (equal) 1, Mrs Mathieson 3. Mrs A. Harris and Mrs H. McDonald were the hostesses.
