OBITUARY

LIEUT.-COLONEL MUIRHEAD, M.P. LONDON, Oct. 29. The death has occurred of Lieuten-ant-colonel Muirhead, M.P. He was found dead in bed by his butler. Lieutenant-colonel Anthony Muirhead had been Under-Secretary for India and Burma since 1938. He was Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry'of Labour from 1935 to 1937, and Under-Secretary of State, Air Ministry, from 1937 to 1938. He was educated at Eton and Oxford, and served in the European War. He was 49 years of age. ALICE BRADY NEW YORK, Oct. 29. The death is announced df Alice Brady. Miss Brady, who was 47 years of age, was a member of a distinguished theatrical family, and herself had a highly successful career on the American stage, making her first appearance in 1909. She first studied for grand opera and san" in several Gilbert and Sullivan productions. Later she firmly established herself as a notable dramatic actress, and from 1914 on added tO' her laurels with many excellent film performances. In more recent years Miss Brady achieved wide popularity as a most distinctive comedienne. MRS E. E. MUIR (Per United Press Association) WELLINGTON, Oct. 30. Well known in musical circles in New Zealand, Mrs E. E. Muir, formerly Miss Gladys Watkins, died at her home in Kelburn, Wellington, to-day. Mrs Muir was a daughter of Mr and Mrs Stephen Watkins and was born at Akaroa. Later she resided at Christchurch, but for the most of her life she had lived in Wellington. Some years ago she went overseas to study carillon playing in London, Bruges and Malines. She gaine'd her diploma in carillon playing in Malines. About 1931 she returned to New Zealand and was appointed permanent carillonist at the Wellington Carillon. Later she went to Sydney for health reasons, where she married Mr Muir, chief reporter on the Evening Post, and then returned to Wellington.
