ST. KILDA TRAM SERVICE

REINSTATEMENT OF TIME TABLE DISCUSSION BY BOROUGH COUNCIL ROUND-TABLE CONFERENCE SUGGESTED i A suggestion that tact rather than militancy would help to smooth awry the difficulties that have arisen out of the alteration to the St. Kilda tram service time table was unanimously agreed to by the Borough Council last night after the members had further discussed what for the past fortnight has been a very live topic among residents of the district. Cr N. D. Anderson opened the discussion by referring to what he termed tbs City Transport Department’s lack of courtesy in failing to reply to the council’s request to have the original service reinstated. “They have replied to nothing.” he said, “ and I am disappointed that they have not even considered our suggestion not to run a bus service during the war period. I think that we should record our disapproval of such treatment.” Cr W. J. Lovell drew attention to several anomalies in the present service. which, he contended, was in no way adequate for the needs of the residents of the borough. Cr H. H, Johnson said that in the final analysis the council had some authority if the Transport Department would not meet its wishes, “As a last resource." he said, “we could revoke tht present bus licences if the department refuses to reinstate the service, although I should be loth to take such a step.” The Mayor (Mr J. J. Marlow): The only sane method is to meet the department in conference. “Why not ask them to meet us in a round-table conference? ” asked Cr G. Glue. Cr E. Longworth agreed with the remarks of the Mayor and Cr Glue. “We must not be at loggerheads with the City Council.” he said. “We have been treated fairly in the past, and I have no doubt that we shall be again if we go the right way about it.” Cr Glue then moved: “ That the council discuss the position at a roundtable conference with the Transport Department,” and the motion, seconded by Cr Longworth, was carried.
