The Macraes-Moonlight Institute celebrated < its fifth birthday on October 18, when an enjoyable afternoon was spent in games and competitions. Miss Irene Innes gave an exhibition of Highland dancing, and choruses were rendered by the members. Mrs Heffernan (vice-president) welcomed the visitors. The cake was cut by Mrs Frank Hayes. The games and competitions were won by Mrs Jenkins, Mrs Murray, and Mrs Hay, Mrs A, Peddie' winning the lucky number at the tea table. The most points for the year’s competitions were secured by Mrs Heffernan, Mrs Elsom, and Mrs Peddie. Mrs Hay was placed fourth.

The monthly meeting of the Awamoa-Alma Institute was held recently, Miss Ross presiding. Miss B. Fulton was elected delegate to the North Otago Federation meeting. Mrs Cowan read several interesting letters from her sister, Miss Pattle, who is at present in England. The competitions resulted: Bloom— Miss J. Fulton 1, Miss Mills 2, Mrs Nicolls 3; re-footing stocking—Miss M, Fulton and Mrs Williams (equal) 1; lettuce—Mrs Nicolls 1, Miss J. Fulton 2, Miss M. Fulton 3, The birthday party took the form of a social afternoon. Mrs Morice donated the birthday cake, which she had baked and iced. Mrs Mcßeath and Mrs Morice cut the cake, A posy was presented to the president by Miss Pearl Greaney, and shoulder sprays were presented to the secretary, the treasurer, and Mrs W. Perry. Mrs F. Parker won the guessing competition, to which a prize was donated by Miss J. Fulton.

Mrs Glover presided over the October meeting of the Paretai Institute, when the motto was, “ Loyalty is still the same whether you win or Ipse the game.” The roll call was “ Recipe and sample.” A competition—spelling bee—was won by Megdames Marshall and O. R. Aitkenhead, with Mrs Glover second. An exchange of 3d parcels caused much amusement. Parcels were collected for the lepers. Mesdames O. V. Aitkenhead and Rumney were the‘hostesses.

The Sawyers’ Bay Institute recently held a “ grandmothers’ day,” when Mrs Paterson presided and welcomed visitors from the Deborah Bay branch of the W.D.F.U, The motto was “Love is the soul of our movement and service is the expression," and the roll call, “My idea of a friend.” The prize for the lucky seat and cup competition was won by Mrs Wright, of Deborah Bay, and a competition for grandmothers only was won by Mrs Pettigrew. Disabled soldiers’ goods were on sale. The hostesses were Mesdames Millar and Robertson and assistants.

At the October meeting of the Taierl Institute Mrs Taylor presided. The motto was “An ounce ox hope is worth a ton of medicine.” The continuity talk on “ The Early History of South Otago ” was given by Mrs Andrews, and an instructive lecture on air raid precautions was given by Mr W D. Pirrett Mesdames Peterson and Andrews rendered a piano duet, “ Valse Brilliante." Tire hostesses were Mesdames Hughes, Pilling, Taylor, Williamson and Wedderspoon.

At the meeting of the Clydevale Institute “ International Day ” was celebrated. Mrs Soper presided. The motto was ‘"Tis the fragrant chain of friendship, ever growing day by day, that makes this old world happy as time goes fast away,’’ and the roll call, “Bring or speak on an article from another country.” Mrs Grant gave a talk on “Women of other countries. The competitions resulted: —Doll dressed in national costume—Miss May (Greece) and Mrs Grant (Poland) I.' Mrs Webb (Holland) 2; vase of narcissi—Mrs R. Dunlop 1, Mrs Cooksley 2; collection of polyanthus and primroses—Mrs Cooksley 1, Mrs Soper 2, Mrs Kee 3. The hostesses were Mrs Stirling and Miss Mowat.

The Kaitangata Institute met recently. Mrs Hadler presiding. The motto was “Live for others and you will never be lonely," and the roll call “The funniest experience in my life.” The competitions resulted:— Coconut ice—Mrs Finch 1, Mrs Hall 2, Mrs Richardson 3; vase of spring flowers—Mrs Hadler 1, Mrs Owens 2. Mrs Finch 3. A demonstration was given by Wtrs Pilling on “ daisy ’’ knitting. A competition was won by Miss Morrisey. The hostesses were Mesdames Hallum, Coulter and Finch.

Mrs Caldwell presided at the monthly meeting of the Maheno Institute. The motto was, “He who cannot make a mistake cannot make anything.” and the roll call. “A cure for the ‘ blues.’ ” The competitions resulted:—Scones: Mrs Price 1. _ Mrs McKenzie 2. Print apron: Mrs Nicholson 1, Mrs Oliver 2.
