The Leader of the Opposition. Mr A. Hamilton, passed through Dunedin on Saturday on his way to Wellington.
The Rev. W. Allen Stevely travelled to Christchurch on Saturday. Mr F. Waite, M.L.C., was a through passenger to Balclutha by the afternoon express on Saturday. Inspector J. Poweli. of New Plymouth, after 36 years’ service in the New Zealand Police Force, will retire at the end of next month. Mr J. Thorn, M.P. for Thames, arrived from Invercargill on Saturday, and will leave to-morrow on his return to Wellington.
Mr H. L. Gibson returned to Dunedin by the express from the north on Saturday afternoon. Mr Arthur Barnett returned to Dunedin from Wellington by the express on Saturday afternoon. Mr T. M. Thompson, of Balclutha. arrived in Dunedin by the express from the north on Saturday afternoon. He has just returned from England, via Panama. A Press Association cable message from Las Vegas states that Mrs Helen Wills Moody has married the polo player, Aidan Roark. It is reported from London that the Bishop of Wellington (the Right Rev. H. St. Barbe Holland) is returning to New Zealand fully restored to health. He states that the war frustrated the raising of funds for the Wellington cathedral, but that the necessary organisation was created, Dr I. E. Coop, a graduate of Canterbury University College, who recently returned to New Zealand after carrying out advanced study in physical chemistry at Oxford and in bio-chem-istry at Cambridge, has been appointed to the plant chemistry section of the Plant Research Bureau. The chairman of the New Zealand Dairy Board (Mr W. E. Hale) in his annual report, expresses regret at the retirement of the board’s chief executive officer and secretary, Mr T. C. Brash. Mr Brash belongs to an Otago pioneer family which came out to New Zealand in the Philip Laing, and gained his first lessons in dairying on his parents’ farm and in a Mosgiel butter factory, Mr A. D. Park, managing director of the State Advances Corporation, has arrived back in New Zealand from Sydney, where he had been on business in connection with the corporation. Other arrivals were Sir Norman Nock, Lord Mayor of Sydney, accompanied by Mr G. K. Bain, general manager of the Australian Guarantee Corporation. They will return by way of Auckland after a short visit.
