NORTH DUNEDIN AMENITIES

SOCIETY'S ANNUAL REPORT The annual report, which will be presented at the annual meeting of the Dunedin North and Leith Amenities Society to-morrow states, inter alia;— The committee’s work this year has been largely concentrated on one or two major projects which have entailed a good deal of correspondence and negotiations with the City Council and officers. The committee is pleased to report that a fair amount of work has been done during the year, and all complaints and suggestions made by members or residents have been attended to as in former years. The new bridge at Woodhaugh is not yet completed, but is now in the finishing stages. AH the concrete is in position and the centre pier of the old bridge lias been removed thus removing the dangerous nature of this. It is a fine structure and we are pleased to report that it will be finished at an early date. Attention was drawn to cars being parked in Gladstone road and at the Post Office just at a car stop. The matter has been taken up with the City Council and the Traffic Department, who are dealing with the matter. There has been considerable correspondence with the council about the dangerous nature of Ramsay street at the corner, where it junctions with Pine Hill terrace. Residents in this area are desirous of having the corner improved and made safe for pedestrians, especially children. This is a major work, and the engineering department have plans for considerable improvement here. It is a question of council finance, and the committee has urged that it be placed on the estimates for this coming year. The committee is co-operating with the residents and will do everything possible to assist.

A full-sized swimming pool has been constructed In the Woodhaugh Park and will no doubt be in use during the coming summer. Through out efforts we got the pool extended from 75 feet to 100 feet in length, and It will be a great acquisition to the amenities of North Dunedin. The committee felt that this being the centennial of the Dominion it should make a special effort to raise a fund and undertake some work that would be a fitting commemoration of the event and at the same time effect, some lasting improvement for North Dunedin. It discussed a number of schemes, and eventually decided on that of improving the approach to the new main highway, via Leith Valley, by planting the hillside in upper Duke street with native trees and flora, and the construction of a wall along the foot of the hill. The roadline is being set back to its full width and is also to be raised on the south side, necessitating the cutting into the bank at the foot of the hill. Much of the work has been done, the hillside has been cleaned and several hundred trees have been planted; the walls have been completed for some distance, and already flowers have been planted on the terrace. It is doubtful if much more planting can be done this year as the season is so far advanced, but it only requires some foresight to see that when completed, this particular work will be a great improvement and a fitting centennial memorial for the north end of the city. The committee desires to exnress its thanks and appreciation to the Dunedin Amenities Society for its co-opera-tion and financial assistance in presenting £SO towards the sum required for material in connection with this work. Since the close of the year a North Dunedin Centennial Committee has been formed, and will be the body responsible for carrying out the work involved and the financial arrangements with the corporation and the Government.
