The threat of war and the actual outbreak of war have had two very different results for London shopkeepers. Before the war every fresh crisis brought a restriction in trade. Nobody bought anythin!* if they could avoid doing so. The outbreak of war had exactly the opposite effect. Emporiums which had previously lamented the crisis found that housewives made a concerted rush to buy up as much as they could, fearing a future shortage. Blankets and sheets were especially sought, and it least one firm profited. Blankets were no longer displayed. When people asked for them the saleSj girls were instructed to say that there were few left: the price was higher, of course, but neople were lucky to be able* to get any blankets at all, for there had been such a rush on them!
