HITLER’S BRIBE REFUSED
DR WINNINGTON INGRAM PRAISES BRITAIN’S DECISION (From Our Own Correspondent) LONDON, Sept. 19. Dr Winninglon Ingram, the recentlyretired Bishop of London, during the course of a sermon at Fulham Parish Church last Sunday, said the issue was a fight between th spirit of Christ and the spirit o. anti-Christ. “ The accursed spirit which nas enslaved Germany and has kept the whole world on tenterhooks for years, but which now. thank God. is to be destroyed for ever, is made up of four thing? most directly opposed to the spirit of Christ These are; “A belief in might as opposed to right; in lies as opposed to truth; in a national god instead of the God and Father of our Lord; and in the oppression of the weak instead of the protection of the weak.” Dealing with Britain’s decision to fight, he said: “ Ve might, at any rate for a time, have bought an ignoble peace by saying that Poland was no concern of ours That is what we were invited to do We were told, Give us a free hand among these weak nations in Eastern Europe and we will not interfere, at any rate at present, with the British Empire.’ To the eternal credit of our rulers they refused the bribe. We will not stand aside and see the weak trampled underfoot.” On the Judgment Day Addressing troops in barracks in the afternoon, Dr Ingram said: “ War is a terrible thing, and the man who has started this will have sorftethinp to answer for before High Heaven " I should be sorry to be in his shoes at the Judgment Day. “ The whole civilised world is on our side. No man ever fought for a better cause l —for 'the freedom of the world.”
