Farmers Protest While approving the action of the Government that there is to be no profiteering as a result of the war, the executive of the South Canterbury Farmers’ Union at Its meeting on Friday, after a review of the position made by the president (Mr A. J. Davey), was somewhat in doubt whether the Government itself was not profiteering in a political sense by its policy of socialisation of the means of production, distribution. and exchange by the passing of recent legislation. In the course of his remarks, Mr Davey said that farmers’ organisations had offered the Government their full co-operation necessary to make defence complete, but the Government had now left the farmers without any doubt that the control of primary products was to be permanent, in spite of the fact that not long ago the Prime Minister gave an assurance to the growers of meat and wool that no control of their products under the Primary Products Marketing Act would be taken except at their request. Commenting on the increase of pay to men engaged on public works, Mr Davey trenchantly criticised the Government’s action and said. " New Zealand must decide, and that quickly, whether public works or primary production is the basic industry of the Dominion.” Fishing Prospects Conditions for fishing in all rivers In South Canterbury are very favourable. This was the view expressed by Mr F. W. Pellett, the curator of the South Canterbury Acclimatisation Society on Saturday Heavy rain fell over the whole dlstri' 4 on Friday, but cleared on Saturday morning. The waters of the Oplhi, Temuka, and Orarl should be in good order for fishing to-day. Lately, Mr Pellett has examined several bags of fishermen and found the fish to be in excellent condition.
