CHASE ENDS IN DEATH
FALL UNDER MOVING TRAIN A CAVALRYMAN KILLED (Per United Press Association; TIMARU, Oct. 20. Slipping as he attempted to board the Fairlie train after it had left the Timaru Station this .afternoon, Robert Sinclair Smith, a painter, of Waimate, was caught under the guard's van and dragged to his death. The accident occurred about 200 yards north of the station. Smith, who was an acting lance-corporal in the Canterbury Cavalry, was on his way to a camp at Cave. With a companion, he ran down Strathallan street as the train pulled over the crossing at the foot of the street and chased the train.
Smith was a married man. aged about 35. It is understood that he leaves four children. He had enlisted in the Special Force on Wednesday.
