TRENTHAM MEETING

♦>« TO-DAY’S FIELDS REVIEWED 4.,' ' „■ . . ,• - LADY FURST A FORM HORSE TORO KOURA IN THE SPRINT

(Special to Daily Times) WELLINGTON, Oct. 20. Good fields have accepted for the second day of the Wellington Racing Club’s spring meeting at Trentham to-morrow, though the presence of Beaullvre has frightened most of his opponents out of the Trentham Stakes. Several fresh horses will be running, thus adding to the difficulties of following form, and altogether the day’s card looks a very hard one for backers The weather remains fine and there appeal's every prospect of another fine day. The going will be in good order and Easter than on Thursday. The Hurdle Handicap Of the horses engaged In the Hurdle race, only Donegal, Jewish Lad. and Espernnce Bay ran the first day. The best backed may be Esperance Bay. Lady Stella, and Sliver River. Trial Stakes There Is a big field in the Trial Stakes, and at the set weights most backers will turn to the three-year-olds as the most likely to provide the winner Boloyna and Modem Way have shown up In recent starts, but the favourites may be Wings of Song, Duncannon, and Yogi Trentham Stakes There Is no need to emphasise the outstanding form of Beaullvre In the Trentham Stakes, and on the running of Baran In the Shorts Handicap on, the first day he may be the most dangerous opponent. Submission and Winning Rival will have to Improve, and Dark Water on form is out of hls class Heretaunga Handicap In the Heretaunga Handicap first day’s form points to Classform and Red Chief, while Aurora's Star and Colonel Bogey may improve. There are several fresh horses With prospects, and the public fancies may include Kobl. Capricious and Hlnerawe Karltane Handicap The two-year-olds In the Karltane Handicap do not look anything out of the ordinary, and most money may come for Black Robe. Beau Coureur and Khurja * Watkins Handicap With no fewer than 21 engaged in the Watkins Handicap and the start so close to the turn out of the straight, a great deal will depend upon post positions and quick beginnings. Lady Furst has been raised IHb, but her form .suggests that she will be hard to beat again. Haughty Winner was running on well at the end of the mile on the first day. and so was Mlshna, and other first day’s form prospects are Centrepoise, Tooley Street, Yours Tnily and Lowenberg. Over the shorter distance Wagner and Rabble might be more dangerous, while Lady Montana, though fresh, always has a chance at Trentham. The favourites may be Lady Furst. Centrepoise and Yours Truly. Awatea Handicap , There are some fresh horses In the Awatea Handicap, which will be interesting from the fact that Sleeveless is running for the first time In open class. On her form she Is a distinct possibility and may even be the favourite. Gay Chou Is in form, and, while Disdain disappointed on the first day she may Improve. Mlttle scored so well that she must be granted a chance again, and Toro Koura, through Density, looks a good prospect, as he easily beat her At Tlmaru and meets her on Jib worse terms Density herself should again be prominent, and Rakahanga Is a fresh horse of possibilities Blonde Princess will have to Improve, but Royal Star 11, unlucky in the Walnul Handicap, may be dangerous. The best backed may be Toro Koura Sleeveless and Royal Star It. Concluding Event A strong field of hacks will contest the concluding event First day’s form Indlcates that Stemchase will be well In the picture, and Kabul might Improve Great-Flight is. greatly fancied by South Islanders, and another from the south with form prospects Is Merry March White Rajah, Malik Kafur, Great Legion and Slglow have all shown form lately and Little Dorrlt’s close third at Otakl over five furlongs to Sleeveless now looks very good The favourites mav include Stemchase, Ruatlti and Little Dorrit The fields are as follows: 12.10 RIMtJ HURDLES HANDICAP, Of £350. November 4 R a 11 -Canterbury J.C Good Maidens Two good maiden performers In Boloyna and! Blue Coat are at Trentham, and should shape well In their engagements A Speedy Son Gay Parade was expected to make a better show in the Shorts Handicap than what proved to be the case. He was with the leaders as they turned for home, but then disappeared. He may do better, as there Is no doubt about his speed. Sleeveless A very good performance was put up by Sleeveless in the Rlmutaka Handicap. She did not appear until the end of the race, and then won with a strong finish under 9.9. It made her fifth consecutive win The Siegfrieds A. feature of the first day’s racing at Trentham was the success scored by the Siegfried stock. Siegfried, who Is now In Southland, had good winners in Old Bill and)' Lady Furst Toro Koura Toro Koura comfortably defeated Density at Tlmaru, and at Wellington Is handicapped to meet her on only lib worse terras. Density’s third In the Shorts Handicap» points to Toro Koura being fairly well handicapped, and he has a good chance. Density Although Density finished third In the Shorts Handicap, she was stopping badly in the last-half -furlong, She ran out to the front in the straight, but Baran then headed her, only in turn to be given the go by by Mlttle. Remedy Required The field for the October Handicap was held up by Barabbas refusing to come in lino, and the delay did not help the others to behave themselves. Raeburn and Indian Sun came out of line a few times probably through the delay caused by Barabbas It is very unfair that a field should be held up through the fractiousness of one horse, and It really appeared as If the starter was confining hls attention to one horse and not the majority of the field. Stricter control to prevent such a state of affairs Is very necessary Beiupartlr Beaupartlr, who started favourite loi the Walnul Handicap, has been one of the; ruling fancies for the New Zealand Cup. He looks bright and healthy, but will have to be fined down for a two-mlle race, as he looks rather big In condition at present. He should Improve by racing, am! In addition could have hls somewhat loaded frame reduced by a couple or more of good sweating gallops. A horse to run a journey cannot carry bulk- on hla frame as well as a good weight on hls back. Disdain Disdain was a good favourite for the Shorts Handicap, and was sweating freely when In the birdcage. She drew the rails but lost the advantage, and Submission, from No 2, was one of the leaders to the straight. Disdain will probably be Improved by the race, which should help •to clean up tyer condition. As a fact, she will have to show considerable Improvement to have a show in the Stewards' Handicap at Rlccarton It may, however, be that a highly-strung temperament may occasionally contribute more to defeat rather than lack of racing condition Convincing Wins Two very convincing wins were scored by Lady Furst and Mlttle Lady Fursl iwent so well that nothing was able seriously to challenge her In the run home She has 7.10 in the New Zealand Cup, but is liable to a rehandicap Mlttle was slow away at the start of the Shorts Handicap, and raced past Baran at the finish to win going away. Those behind Lady Furst and Mlttle will have to shape a lot better to beat them Enrich Enrich, the winner ol the Wellesley Stakes, was got by Safari from Sight Draft, by Paper Money, and was bought at £225 at the sale of the late Mr W Higgins’s horses. He Is trained by H Telford, who also has Absolve, and some consider the latter a much ■ better colt Absolve lost hls chance in the Wellesley Stakes by swerving across the track and getting left several lengths. A Bad Turn A slow beginner in a fairly big field at Trentham when racing from the 10 or 11 furlong starting post has a hard row to hoe, as it means getting into a bad position when racing round the sharp turn out of the straight and round to the • back stretch Tooley Street and Lowenberg were ai the tail of the field when leaving the straight In the Wellington Handicap and had in consequence to give a good start to the leaders over this balance of the journey Tooley Street did very well to finish second and Lowenberg also put up a creditable performance to get near the placed lot Both horses were staying on well and with a better run must be hard to beat In the future The draw for positions in the Watkins Handicap may largely influence the result of the race, as the start is near the sharp turn out of the straight TROTTING NOTES By Sentinel FIXTURES October 21, 23.—Greymouth T.C, Octobei 21 23.-Auckland T C Octobei 23.—Oamaru T.C Octobei 28.-Wellington T.C October 28.-Invercargill T.C. At Greymouth Lady Milne Is In favour for the big race at Greymouth to-day. Looking Well Windsor Lass looks well after her recent racing. She stepped a mile and a-quarter at Addington on Thursday in 2mln 51 4-ssec. King's Warrior tried to give her 2 3-ssec start, but was not equal to the task, being half a length away at the winning post. The effort of King’s Warrior was not impressive. Loyal Pat Loyal Pat gave a pleasing pertormance at Addington on Thursday while pacing a mile and a-quarter In 2min 49sec. He went at an even speed all the way. A Useful Team J. Walsh has Aldus and Dlosma engaged in the Balfour Trot to-day, and Drumbunnif In the Otama Trot Viscosa The Wrack gelding Viscosa will have a big following in the Otama Trot at Gore to-day Jclllcoe Handicap Red Flush, in spite of his failure in August, will be in demand for the Jellicoe Handicap at Epsom to-day. If Uenuku is absent the price will be short Bayard Kewple’s King, Our McKinney and Sandusky will go well, but the main fancies may be Red Flush. Sandusky and Kewpie s King. THE GORE MEETING

FIELDS FOR TO-DAY As there has been no racing in Southland since May of last season, southern sports will welcome the break supplied by the Gore Racing Club’s spring meeting The break will be doubly welcome because it is made with a good card ol excellent fields that bear Indication of providing good sport and hence the card seems sure to draw a large attendance The fields contain a number of horses that have not been seen out for some time and hence those in search of winners will lean towards those already raced this season.

The field for the Walkaka Handicap nas the New Zealand Cup candidate Thermidor at the top of the list She has been training on. and shaped well in the Teschemaker Handicap when third to Wardress and Swordstlck at the end of a mile and a-quarter in 2mtn 4 3-ssec She meets Monipere on 21b better terms than at Tlmaru, and so holds him safe on paper, Monipere is a bit doubtful at the barrier and settled his chance at the start of his race at Tlmaru A soft track would, however, assist his chance Silver Streak Is another that would be favoured by a track with the sting out of the going Under such conditions he might prove particularly hard to beat. Roy Bun won the Geraldine Cup in good style and now has an extra 101 bto carry He failed on the second day when Valantua ran an excellent race and just missed a place Roy Bun, however, did not get a good run but nevertheless Valantua, who is galloping well may again be able to account for him Amelita and Mona’s Song have not raced for some time Monipere beat Sir Hugh at the Otago Hunt Club’s meeting, but the latter has a chance under a light weight. The stable has Thermidor also engaged Sailing Lady cannot be fancied on her form at the Dunedin spring meeting, and the same remark applies to Ashaway and Made Money Since then Sailing Lady Is reported to be showing improvement in her track work the fact that Roy Bun is being taken on the long journey from Riccarton to Gore suggests that he has been doing well and mav start a better favourite than Valantua and Thermidor. who may do better over more ground on the second day There was not much between Lord Nuffield, Phalanx and Flagman at the finish of the Telegraph Handicap, run in fast time at the Dunedin spring meeting. Each of them will be Improved by racing at Wlngatui, and as Flagman meets Lord Nuffield on 81b and Phalanx on 41b better terms he will give them a good deal of trouble to beat him There is no reason to assume that a horse cannot be saddled up really fit and well to repeat form after a fairly long absence from public performance, but experience leans to those with the benefit of a race or two to tune them up Most of those engaged may be under the disadvantage of requiring a race, and for that reason are left out of calculation Skyrena has been placed in three of her four starts this season, and Norseman once in four starts. On form at the Dunedin spring meeting Lord Nuffield, Phalanx and Flagman represent the mosf danger. Some of the fields may present a rather different aspect on the day, as allowances may be claimed. The following may be amongst ’hose fancied for their engagements:— Mandeville Hlgh-weighi Handicap.Chirp, Turakl, Klppen. Gordon Hack Handlcap.-Nlgger Boy. Islay Downs. Dark Flight or Night Pal.
