BRITISH COAL INDUSTRY
BIG INCREASE PLANNED (British Official Wireless) RUGBY, Oct. 13. The British coal industry is planning an increase in output by about 300,000,000 tons a year. Much of the extra coal will be used to meet the increasing demands of the export market. Bigger supplies are required by France, and large orders are expected from Italy as a result of negotiations now being actively pursued with the Italian Government. The Anglo-Polish agreement is now at an end because the Polish mines are in Germany’s possession. The valuable Scandinavian market was divided almost equally between Britain and Poland. British exporters hope not only to retain their share of this market, but to increase it. Proposals under which Britain’s coal production can be largely expanded are being submitted to the Government by the owners’ and coal miners’ organisations. Home industries will also want more coal than formerly now that they and other factories are engaged in the country’s war effort and are coming into maximum production.
