NOTES ON THE RUNNING

(Special to Daily Times) * . AUCKLAND, Oct. 14. The odds-on favourite, Beauiivre, scored an attractive victory in the Great Northern Guineas. Brazen Bold and Our Jean set a last pace, running the first halfmile in -msec, with Beauiivre (rails) and Orelio together in behind them. Just as they reached the turn Brazen Bold, and Our Jean showed signs ol weaxCning, and Beauiivre was checked slightly. Quick to take advantage of this, IvicT'avish slipped Orelio to the front with a clear lead of a couple of lengths, and Beauiivre had to be taken to the outside to run past Brazen Bold and Our Jean. It was then that the class of Beauiivre asserted itself and he soon took the measure of Orelio to draw clear in the last furlong. Orelio battled on gamely for second, and Foxmond came strongly on the outside for third. Our Jean weakened into fourth, and Foxsen. Fils de Vaals, and Brazen Bold were well beaten. Another surprise was registered in the Shorts Handicap, when Orate scored attractively to pay over two score. In spite of the fact that Orate drew near the outside, he was in front before going a furlong, and although headed by Vaiimeen in the middle stages was always a winner In the straight, where he was strongly challenged by Royal Bachelor, who finished with more determination than usual. After being in behind on the fence until after passing the turn, Val Lu also ran on strongly to gain third, just ahead of Llangollen, who went a splendid race under her big weight, always being well placed on the rails. Bronwen made a good showing for fifth. The four-year-old Royevrus registered a fine performance In winning the Mitchelson Cup from end to end. Inver went with him to the turn, where the field bunched, but Royevrus was always a Winner in the straight, stalling off a determined challenge from Birthday Boy, who came home splendidly on the rails after Royevrus had moved outwards. Sly Fox, never farther back than fourth, held on gamely for third after pulling early, and Ned Cuttle was closer in fourth position at the finish than at any other stage. Golden Sheila, who is not quite at her best yet, shaped creditably for fifth, and Master Brierly was running on. The each-way favourie The Cardinal was never dangerous, although he made a forward move on the outside at the turn. Tidewaiter ran up very quickly on the outside into a forward position at the turn/ but failed to go on. Gold Vaals fell as the field was nearing the turn. Scotland was right in the picture until the last furlong, where he weakened. Improved by her racing at Avondale, Queen City won the Welcoirr Stakes after an exciting finish With Grandora. Queen City, on the rails, followed Lovaals, Kentucky. and Grandora into the straight, and she came home strongly on the outside to beat Grahdora, Who bored out Slightly after reaching the front with less than a /furlong to go. Kentucky shaped well fob third, and Lovaals, although she weakened in the last furlong, was a creditable fourth. The each-way favourite Beau Leon was fifth, but ran much below expectations after jumping out well. Phaleron was ver/ slow away, and Golden Bonnet refused to face the barrier. The day was concluded with another substantial dividend when Silver Quex narrowly defeated the each-way favourite Francis Drake. Silver Quex, who is a full-sister to Round Up, displayed speed on the outside along the back to take the lead after going two' furlongs, and she ran on in fine style to prevail from Francis Drake, who challenged strongly after following her Into the straight; The topweight, Flood Tide, having his first run for a year, finished attractively for third, and should be much improved by the race as he Is in nice condition, and just a little pretty. Valamito was in on the rails behind Silver Quex and Francis Drake up the straight, and just missed third. Pirate King and Royal Appellant, who should improve, were handy at the turn. Notium was also prominent on the outside at this stage, but failed to run on.
