NORTH ISLAND CHAMPIONSHIP F. CANDY THE WINNER (Per United Press Association) AUCKLAND, Oct. 15. From Newmarket at 9.30 a.m. yesterday a big field of riders was despatched on the annual professional 100 miles North Island Cycling Championship over a course to Rangiriri and back to Auckland. All the 49 riders handicapped started, the limit men leaving at 9.30 and the scratch men 48 minutes later. The competitors included a strong contingent from Taranaki, and riders from all parts of Auckland province. The first to turn home to Rangiriri were the three Pukekohe riders, B. Wharerangi, T. Connell and W, Anderson (all off the 42min mark), followed by J. and S. Brosnan. of Waitoa (both 48min). All were riding strongly, having a substantial lead on the field, which faced a hard wind over the first half. The following were the results: —F. Candy (Inglewood), 9min, 1; J. Skiffington (Waitoa), 33min, 2; D. Kingsford (Waihi). 20min. 3. Time: 4hr 24min 45sec. The fastest time went to D, Purdie (Taranaki), who covered the distance in 4hr 23min 30sec. The winner registered the second fastest time.
