WARDRESS WINS BIG EVENT .

TORO KOURA BEATS DENSITY

(From Our Special Reporter) TIMARU, Oct. 14 The South Canterbury Jockey Club s spring meeting was held In fine weather, and attracted a large attendance, which no doubt welcomed the opportunity to divert the mind from the world-dominat-ing topic of war. The truck was In excellent order, showing a good sole of grass providing firm and fast going. The card provided some excellent racing and close finishes. . . All on the card went out.lor the rechemaker Handicap, and Wardress started a fairly solid favourite. She justified the confidence by scoring well in a fast-run race. Swordstick ran a good race, but Wardreiss proved much too good for him. Thermidor showed improving form, but the others found the task beyond their present power. Density was the popular Dick tor the Flying,.Handicap, but after she had been in charge from the barrier to inside the distance Toro Koura cut her down in the final half-furlong. . During the day £14,467 went through the totalisator. as against £15.355 10s last year. There was only a small pool on the hurdle race, and Density and Toro Koura were the only solidly-backed horses in the Flying Handicap:— Following are the details:— OTAIO HURDLE HANDICAP, Of £l3O. Shand) 3 Also started: 2/2 Fund;/ Bay 9.5 5/5 King Icel 9.0. . A Funcly Bay and Ballad led to the first hurdle, and the former dropped his rider. Ballad led Into the back, and was joined by Jewish Lad, and they were several lengths clear of the others. Jewish Lad led round to the top, and Ballad joined in at the last hurdle, but ran it down, and the former came on to win by five lengths. Mount Val was about the same distance away. Counter Lunch and Lord Midas began best and led round the top from Airline, Mutunga, Some Abbey and Don’t Forget. Counter Lunch and Lord Midas led Airline into the straight, and inside the distance Queen Beth ran into third place. Counter Lunch beat Lord Midas by half a length. Monlpere got left and Spartan. Rebel Lad, and The Wrecker led out of the straight and along the back, where Swordstick. Gay Rebel, and Dictate were all handy. Wardress, Thermidor, and Balmeriter were at the tall of the field going to the far turn. Spartan and The Wrecker led round the top, where Rebel Lad, Swordstick, Gay Rebel. Rabble, and Dictate were in a bunched field, and Wardress and Thermidor making up ground. Once in the straight Swordstick headed The Wrecker and Spartan, and then Wardress and Thermidor joined the leaders. Wardress came on to win bv a length from Swordstick. who beat Thermidor a length and a-half. Spartan was Close up fourth, a head away, with Gay Rebel and The Wrecker next. Time, 2min 4 3-ssec. Prince de Oro and Waikari Jack led into the straight, and then Shadow Queen and Accountant arrived on the scene. In the run home Accountant won by a length from Shadow Queen, who beat Walnoni Girl by two lengths. Straight. Marque, Black Art, andWaikari Jack were next. Density soon drew clear and anproaching the far turn was joined by Epic, and they led along from Toura Koura.
