WARDRESS WINS BIG EVENT .

(From Our Special Reporter) TIMARU, Oct. 14 The South Canterbury Jockey Club s spring meeting was held In fine weather, and attracted a large attendance, which no doubt welcomed the opportunity to divert the mind from the world-dominat-ing topic of war. The truck was In excellent order, showing a good sole of grass providing firm and fast going. The card provided some excellent racing and close finishes. . . All on the card went out.lor the rechemaker Handicap, and Wardress started a fairly solid favourite. She justified the confidence by scoring well in a fast-run race. Swordstick ran a good race, but Wardreiss proved much too good for him. Thermidor showed improving form, but the others found the task beyond their present power. Density was the popular Dick tor the Flying,.Handicap, but after she had been in charge from the barrier to inside the distance Toro Koura cut her down in the final half-furlong. . During the day £14,467 went through the totalisator. as against £15.355 10s last year. There was only a small pool on the hurdle race, and Density and Toro Koura were the only solidly-backed horses in the Flying Handicap:— Following are the details:— OTAIO HURDLE HANDICAP, Of £l3O. Rabble, and Dictate were in a bunched field, and Wardress and Thermidor making up ground. Once in the straight Swordstick headed The Wrecker and Spartan, and then Wardress and Thermidor joined the leaders. Wardress came on to win bv a length from Swordstick. who beat Thermidor a length and a-half. Spartan was Close up fourth, a head away, with Gay Rebel and The Wrecker next. Time, 2min 4 3-ssec.
