GREAT QUALITIES

BRITISH TROOPS IN FRANCE EXCELLENT MORALE OBSERVERS IMPRESSED (British Official Wireless) RUGBY, Oct. 12. (Received Oct. 13, at 7 p.m.) Following are a few expressions by a French observer who paid a visit to the British troops in France:—"After three days spent, at the British general headquarters I am satisfied that there is no doubt that our allies have great qualities—their sense of discipline, their faith in the cause they are serving, their quiet resolution, and above all the perfection of their morale. In no spirit of bravado and with no flourish of trumpets has this great British army come to our shores. His Majesty's soldiers like their French comrades, wear an air of cold resolution. They are men who have come to accomplish a necessary task No army has even been better equipped and no army has ever taken the field with such supplies of guns and ammunition. My general impression after spending three days with the British army is that the morale of our allies is ready for anything. It is the morale of a united nation which puts all its forces at the service of war in the cause of justice, freedom and the peace of humanity " USE OF GAS MINES NAZI ALLEGATION DENIED LONDON, Oct. 12. The War Office, replying to the German report that Polish troops on September 8 at Jaslo used Yellow Cross gas mines supplied by Britain, denies that any type of gas was supplied to Poland. Zaleski, the Polish Foreign Minister, broadcasting in English from London, said: "I am deeply impressed by the determination of our great Allies to carry on the struggle no matter what sacrifices it might entail and no matter how long it may last." To capitals in north and southeast Europe which might be wondering whether the cause of liberty has been los*t in Europe, he would say: "Be of good cheer—l have seen at work the war machines of Britain and France. Poland is also carrying on the fight." AUDIENCE THE KING (British Official Wireless) RUGBY, Oct. 12. M. Zalesky, Foreign Minister of the new Polish Government, was received in audience by the King. AID FOR WAR SUFFERERS GROUPS IN AMERICA WASHINGTON, Oct. 12. (Received Oct. 13, at 6.30 p.m.) President Roosevelt appealed for the co-ordination of the activities of groups aiding war sufferers with the Red Cross. He said: "While the United States as a nation is neutral, she can not be indifferent to the suffering in wartorn countries, particularly in regard to women and children. The continuance of the war will result in more appalling sufferings needing relief from bodies in addition to the Red Cross. I hope that these groups will supplement, not conflict, with the established agencies." WAR LOAN FOR CANADA OTTAWA, Oct. 12.
