Embarrassed With Riches As evidence that there are plenty of horses in training it may be mentioned that 27 have been entered for the Novice Handicap,, to be run at Gore. The nominations for the Gordon Hack Handicap, Novice, Handicap, Waimea Huck Handicap and Trial Handicap all exceed the safety number, and with a possibility of having 10 fields on each day's card the club is In danger of being embarrassed with riches wilth a wealth of horses. The nominations for the Farewell Handicap also go well over the safety number, and that would make 11 fields on the second day's;.;card. ■.-, .. ,".".,.,.) jKCup;, Candidates • ;, \.' The field for. the Ranfurly Handicap, to be run at. Wingatui on Saturday. Includes New Zealand Cup candidates in Thermldor, Passaform. Settlement, Swordstick, .Spiarttn, Made Money and Balmenter. ■lt "must be something in the nature of, a record for the, principal handicap decided at the Wlngatui spring meeting to attract so many New Zealand Cup candidates. At last year's meeting the Ranfurly Handicap, one mile, was won by Milford, who afterwards finished third in the New Zealand Cup. Milford ran second on the first day to Last Refrain In the Mosgiel Handicap. In 1937 Sliver Streak ran.second to Queen Dorothy in the.Mosgiel Handicap, and afterwards finished third to Cerne Abbas and Wild Chase in the New Zealand Cup In 1938 The Surgeon won the Mosgiel Handicap and was unplaced in the New Zealand ' Cup. In 1934 Steeton won the Mosgiel Handicap and afterwards stole the New Zealand Cup after getting a great break after going a mile. It was probably the most remarkable Cup In history, as a winner never stole such a march on any previous field saddled up for the race. One of the most remarkable races that ever took place at Wingatui was when Pampero and Canteen were the only runners iln the. Mosgiel Handicap. It was a great race that proved big fields are not necessary to provide, a battle royal on the tii)rf. They went stride for stride all the way: and carne on up the straight locked together . A ding-dong fighting finish resulted In Pampero beating Canteen by a nose. Prior to going to Rlccarton Pampero was credited with a great over a mile and three-quarters for the ,New Zealand Cup, and J McCombe was again 1 to the mount Pampero unfortunately struck, himself -when working at Jtlciearton two or three days before the- meeting and djd not reach the post He was almost, certain to have beaten Canteen.* McCombe got the mount on Canteen and won, but was lucky, as the late J. Taggart had to lead and run with him for several yawls at the start Canteen had a kink In the Ranfurlv Handicao Canteen. Bombardo and Sirius comprised the field Canteen was regarded as a certainty, but when L G. King woke h'm with the whip he swerved in behind Bombardo. and the latter won by half a dozen lengths It will be seen that New-Zealand Cud winners can be found at the Dunedin soring meeting, and this ypar the pri«clnaT event will nrovfde the most Inljerestine trial ever rim for the New Zealand Him in the South island Dunedin Sprint Meeting ' Tftie acceptances for the handicap events to be decided at the Dunedin spring meeting will make quite a good card, and the original fields show very little shrinkage on their originaj strength. Silver Streak, High Glee and Pink Robe are the only absentees from the Ranfurly Handicap Silver Streak is in the Telegraph Handicap, and Pink - Robe in the Wakarl Hurdles. Bay Ottke is the only one to drop out of the Telegraph Handicap, and the origiinal field still remains in the Cla-

rendon Handicap. The Sandwichman Is the only missing entry for the Waikari Hurdles, and the acceptances make a very favourable comparison with the number of horses handicapped. Mario's Acre

While contesting the Ngatea Handicap at Pueroa, Marie r s Acre broke a small bone in his near foreleg and was pulled up some distance from the post He was extremely lame afterwards, but an effort is to be made to save him for stud purposes. Marie's Acre is a fine-looking five-year-old stallion by Acre from Lady Mario, hence a half-brother to Gay Blonde, Gay Shield, Gay Sheik and Philcourt, . • "Certainties"

There may be many good betters about still, but It is very problematical whether there are the leviathans of the good old days. One of the patrons at the Marton spring meeting last Saturday, says an exchange, was a, former, "leviathan." but to-day he is content for the main part to play a much more modest role. Commenting upon the fact that the winners of the two lumping events had been backed down to odds-on, the one-time punter dubbed those, who had supported them to that extent as "mad," maintaining that their records merited odds ,of two-to-one. However, he humorously added that he had been " mad " himself in the old days, and recounted an occasion when he had put £3OO on Tamatete. That day M. McCiirten had ridden a close finish the champion getting' home by a head The dividend had been the handsome one of £1 0s 6d. and he had staked £3OO to win £7 10s. At Wingatui,

Training operations were carried out at Wingatui yesterday morning under very favourable conditions. The weather was quite summer-like, and the sand track provided excellent going. FINALS FOR WINGATUI (Special to Daily Times) CHRISTCHURCH, Oct 2. The conditions were ideal for the work at Rlccarton this morning. The outside of the trial grass track was fast, while the plough, though slower, was also in good order. All the local horses that are to race at the Dunedin meeting and a number of candidates for South Canterbury and Trentham got through smart Hilrobe had her head in front of Dictate at the end of five furlongs in lmin 1 2-ssec, a smart effort.
