SHIPPING INDUSTRY
VALUE TO AUSTRALIA CRITICISM OF NEGLECT ”It is apparent that the shipping industry is looked upon as the most important any country can possess but this does not appear to be the opinion of Australian statesmen, as it has been systematically ignored,” said Sir Walter Carpenter at the annual meeting in Sydney of W. R. Carpenter and Co. Ltd., island traders As there was a general feeling that Australia should commence to build ships on her own account, so as to take care of herself should trouble arise, the company had made an offer to the Government to build a 10,000-ton vessel in Australia if the Government were prepared to .absorb the extra cost compared with building it in England This project however could not be proceeded with. Copra had remained very low during the year, wavering between £lO and £ll a ton, which was stultifying expansion in the Islands. Most of the commodities of a primary nature also were suffering from low prices.
