EXPLOSION IN QUARRY INQUEST ON VICTIM (Per United Press Association) WHANGAREI, Aug. 22. An inquest on the body of Gavin Charles Cotter, who died in the hospital on July 19 following terrible miaries caused by the explosion of a drill which he was dressing at the Tauraroa quarry, was held to-day. A verdict was returned that death was due to shock following an explosion of gelignite which had accidentally got into a djill during earlier boring operations. FATAL HEAD INJURIES PEDESTRIAN STRUCK BY CAR (Per United Press Association) WELLINGTON, Aug. 22. While crossing. the Parade at Island Bay at 6.30 this evening Vivian Claude Parker, of Devonshire road, Miramar. a married man with one child, was struck by a motor car and received head injuries from which he died almost immediately. Parker was a barman employed at the Shamrock Hotel. KILLED UNDER TRAIN A PROMINENT MAORI (Per United Press Association) TAURANGA, Aug. 22. While walking across the railway bridge to Matapihi at 6.45 last night, a well-known Native, Sam Tu, was struck by a train coming to Tauranga. At the time of the accident he was nearly across the bridge. Those on the train were not aware of the accident, and the body, badly mutilated, was found at 7.15 by Tupe Faulkner, who was coming to town. He immediately communicated with the police, who brought the body to Tauranga. Sam Tu, who was over 70 years old, had resided in the district all his life. He belonged to the Ngatitapu tribe, and was amongst the recipients of the King George VI Coronation Medal. In his vounger days he was a prominent athlsie in the Bay of Plenty. He is survived by his wife, a son, and daughter. SHOT IN JAW BUSHMAN CRITICALLY INJURED (Per United Press Association) TAUMARUNUI, Aug. 22. A bushman, Mr Jack Groves, aged about 30, single, of Rangataua, was accidentally shot in the jaw while practising target shooting with a pearifle. Several men at the camp were practising shooting and Mr Groves, after adjusting the target, came from behind a building jusjt as one man fired. The bullet shattered Mr Groves's jaw and lodged in his throat. He was rushed to the Raetihi Hospital in a critical condition. The injured man was later transferred to the Taumarunui Public Hospital. A FRACTURED NOSE Albert Senne, who resides at Miller's Flat, was admitted to the Hospital at 5.15 p.m. yesterday suffering from a fractured nose received when he fell in the Octogan. FACIAL ABRASIONS Robert Weir, a young man, residing at 64 Filleul street, was admitted to Hospital yesterday morning suffering from facial abrasions and concussion received when he fell from his bicycle.
