NEW ZEALAND STUDENTS
R.A.M. SUCCESSES TWO PRIZE WINNERS (From Our Own Correspondent) LONDON. July 24. Two New Zealand pianoforte students, both pupils of Professor Frederick Moore, have been specially distinguished at the Royal Academy of Music this term. They are Miss Janetta McStay (Invercargill) and Miss Jean McLeod (Christchurch), Miss McStay has won the Walter Macfarren gold medal for pianoforte playing. Before competing for this award a student must have completed four years’ study at the R.A.M and have passed all examinations in their order It is believed that Miss McStay is the first New Zealand girl to have gained this award
It may be remarked in passing that Mr Frederick Moore won this medal for boys (a separate award) when he was a student in 1899 The Walter Macfarren gold medals for pianoforte playing were founded by himself in commemoration of the completion of 50 years’ professorship. Miss McLeod has gained the Challen gold medal. For this, a number of the best students are picked out from the annual examinations, and they compete at the end of the term. The prizes were presented by H.R.H, the Duchess of Gloucester.
