IMPORTS OF FOOTWEAR
LITTLE DIMINUTION SHOWN STATEMENT BY MANUFACTURERS' SECRETARY (Per United Press Association): //, WELLINGTON, Aug. 14. The secretary of the New'Zealand Footwear Manufacturers' Association, Mr Rocke O'Shea, stated to-day . that the official figures of imports in first half of 1939 hardly confirmed the statement from Auckland that the stocks Of imported footwear had very much diminished, Mr O'Shea ' said. " These are the figures for the first half of 1939 and 1938 respectively:—Children's shoes, 0 to 9, 16,000 dozen pairs and 12,000; leather footwear, 17,000 dozen pairs and 22,000. The value of the latter is £148,822, compared with £149,614 for the first half of 1938." The shortage of children's shoes, Mr O'Shea said, was not in sizes 0 to 9, the imports of which had greatly increased., There was no restriction. In the first half of 1939 the leather boots and shoes imported totalled 17,260 dozen ; pairs, almost exactly the same as for the first half of 1935 and 1936.
