AN APPEAL FOR HELP

TO THE EDITOR Sir, —One can sympathise with the secretary of the Crippled Children Society. His duty is to carry out the wishes of the executive, and the executive handling as it does . public money must be guided by the opinions of its responsible and qualified advisers. Unfortunately, in the case of infantile paralysis, the seas of expert knowledge (despite the devoted care of the medical profession) are strewn With wrecks. In the cases now under review the society's own records are sad confirmation of this. Imagine the grief of a parent told to take her crippled children home with only a hope that perhaps in time something more might be done for them! Could any of us refrain from exhausting every possible avenue of relief? As a member of the Crippled Children Society, I realise its difficulties in discriminating, but I would rather see it spend a few pounds adventurously than bind itself to orthodoxy where orthodoxy admits itself not allsufficient. This is not to advocate the cause of every quack or charlatan that may arise. On the contrary, honest reputation must be established, but methods should not be condemned solely because they have not received official recognition, I myself know of several Dunedin business men who received benefit from the treatment under discussion after other means had failed. . I enclose a donation which I trust you will be kind enough to accept oh behalf of the appeal.—l am. etc., Subscriber.

[A donation of £l, enclosed by the writer of the above letter, is being forwarded to Mrs Evelyn Knowles, of Tahakopa. All donations should be sent to her direct.—Ed. 0.D.T.3
