QUEENSTOWN The Weather Nearly two inches' of snow fell on Saturday night, and it was snowing intermittently on Sunday. There have been several hard frosts. Further impetus has been given to ski-ing on suitable slopes near the town. Rugby Football Owing to the recent snow and hard frosts, the playing grounds have been made dangerous tor play, for that reason all matches were nut off on Saturday. Acclimatisation Society . A meeting of the council of the Lakes District Acclimatisation Society was held in the County Chambers on Tuesday last. Dr W. A. Anderson presided. The secretary. District Centennial Memorial Committee, wrote soliciting financial support for the proposed memorial gates at the Frankton aerodrome.—lt was decided to contribute the sum of £2 2s, Major p. Mackenzie handed in a telegram and letter which he had received from Mr F. Duncan, stating, in effect, that the Department of Internal Affairs could not supply rainbow trout ova at a reduced rate.—Secretary to thank Mr Duncan for his efforts on behalf of the society;—The Southland, Otago and Waitaki Societies wrote stating that rainbow ova could not be supplied. The president stated that 250,000 eyed brown trout had beeji placed in the hatchery and were doing well under the supervision of Mr Reidy. The Otago Society wrote stressing the advisability of the Lakes and Otago Societies having similar dates for the opening and closing of the game and angling seasons.—lt was decided to adopt the Otago Society's dates for the fishing season on Lake Wanaka—namely. November 1 to May 31—and for the Californian quail shooting season, which is from June 1 to July 31. ..

A report was received from the ranger regarding a member of a party which was caught shooting game on the Queenstown-Cromwell road without a Lake party subsequently took out the necessary licence, and it was decided* to take no action. The council resolved to renew the application to the Marine Department for a special fishing licence. It was decided to protest against a remit making it compulsory for anglers to take out fishing licences with the Acclimatisation Society for the district in which they resided. Territorial Association

Over 50 residents of Queenstown and the surrounding district attended a meeting to consider the formation of a Territorial Association in Queenstown. The Mayor, who presided, stated that the forming of a /Territorial Association in the town was most desirable at the present time. Everyone should be behind the movement in order to facilitate as far as' possible the formation of units for defence purposes. Captain Green, district recruiting officer for Otago, briefly stated what was being done in other centres he had visited. People everywhere were anxious that something should be done in preparation for any emergency that might arise. The prime object of the movement was to make people defericeminded. Major H. Mackenzie (president of the Invercargill Association) and Lieutenant A, R. Cockerill also pointed out the desirability of encouraging the enlistment of young men in the territorials.

It was unanimously decided to form a Queenstown Territorial Association, and the following officers were elected: —Patron, Mr A. Hamilton; president, Dr W. A. Anderson; secretary, Mr H. D. London; committee—Captain Herbert, Major P. Mackenzie, the Rev. D. K. Boyd. Messrs W. Stewart, W. Mclnnes, J. M. Royds, C. M. Inglis, J. P. Fix and L. Lee. It was decided to consult the local platoon with reference to holding a demonstration and recruiting campaign at an opportune time. It was resolved to hold a recruiting meeting on Monday in the County Chambers for all who desired to join one or other of the sections specified. MIDDLEMARCH The Weather On Saturday, when the snow had cleared so as to make it possible for some of the high-country men to get out on to their runs, a gale sprang up from the north-west, and during the night and on to mid-day yesterday the whole countryside was once more in the grip of winter. Bowie, superintendent of the Presbyterian Sunday school, who is leaving

on a visit to England for educational purposes, was bade farewell at a social evening in the Presbyterian Church hall. The Rev. F. W. Winton presided, and. after several speakers had eulogised the work of Mr Bowie for the church, Mrs J.McKinlay presented him with a suitably inscribed suitcase from the Sunday school teachers and Bible class members.
