PACIFIC ISLAND BASES
AMERICAN NAVAL AIRCRAFT CONSTRUCTION ORDERED 1 WASHINGTON, Aug. 11. The navy has ordered work to be started on five Pacific island air bases with the award of construction contracts totalling approximately 14,607,000 dollars—namely, at Kaneohe Bay on Oaku Island, the fleet air base at Pearl Harbour, and at Midway, Johnston, and Palmyra Islands.-
Congress authorised 12 bases last session, appropriating 65,000,000 dollars for the purpose. The navy's announcement indicates that the new Pacific works will be accelerated beyond the others'.
