REPRESENTATIVE FIXTURES OTAGO AND SOUTHLAND SENIOR pAME DRAWN The annual basketball fixture between Southland and Otago, for the Southland Cup, was played at Logan Park on Saturday afternoon. Playing conditions were not entirely satisfactory, and both teams are to be commended for the manner in which they handled the ball. The shooting of the forwards was the only section of the game which seemed to be affected by the wind. The game was the most exciting witnessed in Dunedin for some considerable time, and was undoubtedly a thrilling exhibition of basketball.

The Teams

The teams which took the field were: — Southland: Attacks—L. Mehaffey, M. McGrath, P. Henderson; centres—E. Neame (captain), V, Fraser, A. Pittaway; defenders—B. Ingram, M. Kennedy, L. Barrett, M. McDonald. Otago: Attacks—D. Adams, J. Clayton, M. Morrison and R. Parke; centres —L. Scott, G. McAuslin, Q. Phelan and B. Maddigan; defenders—E. Sinclair (captain), J. McLean, M. Whittington and W. Dunn. , Southland won the toss and took the throw-off, but the Otago defence cleared and a speedy movement by G. McAuslin, L. Scott, J. Clayton and D. Adams saw the latter opening the score with an excellent shot at goal. Otago I, Southland nil. An infringement by Southland gave the Otago forwards the ball, but J. Clayton's shot was carried out. The successive Southland attack was stayed by J. McLean, b<rt Southland centres captured, L. Mehaffey gaining possession under the goal post and opening the score for Southland. Otago 1, Southland 1. Successive movements resulted in M. McGrath scoring twice, the score reading Southland 3, Otago 1. Otago carried the ball to the goal mouth, but the shot at goal failed. Q. Phelan intercepted brilliantly In the centre, and the Otago forwards again covered the ground in a remarkable manner, J. Clayton adding the second goal. Southland 3. Otago 2 . M. Kennedy repulsed the following Otago attacking movement, but Southland lost possession at the goal moutn. V Fraser initiated Southlands next movement, but M. Whittington captured on the line, and the ball travelled quickly to the Otago end. where the attacks added the third goal, making the score: Southland 3, Otago a. J. McLean prevented Southland from scoring in their next two movements, but L. Mehaffey at length earned possession and shot successfully. Southland 4. Otago 3. after six minutes play. G. McAuslin inaugurated the next movement from the throw off, D. Adam capturing in a bnlliant movement and again equalising: Southland 4 Otaeo 4. M McGrath and M. Morrison shot unsuccessfully, but a clever interception by L. Scott again gave the forwards an opportunity D. Adams adding the fifth goal. Otago 5. Southland 4. Southland scored again, and brilliant forward play by the Otago forwards brought the score to: Otago 7, Southland 5. J. Clayton captured cleverly and carried the play to p. Adams who scored. Otaeo 8. Southland 5. , . , . ~ .. Attackinn movements by both sides tailed, until L. Mehaffey again captured under the post and scored. Otago 8. Southland 6. M. Morrison executed a clever movement and D. Adams converted Otago 9 Southland 6. Enterprising and spectacular play on the part of the nine Otago players resulted in two more goals being added bv M. Morrison and D. Adams. Otago 11. Southland 7. The two sets ot centres provided very attractive exhibitions of splendid courtcraft, with the result that two

goals were scored for both sides, the Otago forwards playing spectacularly. Otago 14, Southland 10. Otago followed with another 'Splendid team movement, G. McAuslin and Q. Phelan being prominent and J. Clayton finalising with a neat shot at goal, Otago 15, Southland 10. The last three minutes of the first half saw excellent attacking movements by both teams, with Otago unsuccessful in its shooting and Southland adding two goals. J. McLean (Otago) and.M. Kennedy (Southland) were responsible for strong defensive work, with L. Scott proving a tower of strength in the centre. ■ ■ The half-time score was: Otago 15. Southland 12. «*«-« The second half opened with Otago in possession of the ball, but opportunities were lost in the goal-mouth. M. Kennedy and B. Ingram played with more confidence, but the Otago forwards kept up the pressure. D. Adams shot, the ball, rolling out of the ring. Otago was unfortunate with its next-three shots, and L. Mehaffey scored two goals for Southland before Otago again netted, J. Clayton converting. Otago 18, Southland 14. ... i„ Both teams attacked strenuously without result until L. Mehaffey captured from an Otago throw-in and scored. Otago 16. Southland 15. Alternate goals were adde py J-»-Adams and L. Mehaffey. Otago 17, Southland 17 i From then on until the end of the game, excitement ran high, with the ball travelling from one end of the field to the other, with spectacular interceptions by centre players, ine Southland defence pressed more firmly, but despite this, the Otago forwards held their position. Otago.—Attacks—O. Ferguson, M. Roy, A. Kay; centres—G. McDonald. M. Cameron, P. Mutimer; defenders— J. Ingram, D. Turner, and N. Hanlin. The game between Otago B Grade and Southland B Grade was played prior to the Otago-Southland fixture. The excitement prevailing in the latter game was not so marked as was evinced in the senior fixture, the Otago team saining and maintaining a decided lead throughout the game. Both teams scored at the commencement of the game, and again added goals to bring the score to 3-all. Otago attacked strongly, adding three more goals, making the score 6—3 in its favour at half time. In the second half the players improved their position in the first 10 minutes of nlay. the score then reading B—4. Southland attacked unsuccessfully, and olay was carried to the Otago end. where a further Koal was added. Bright play brought the score to 11—5. and during the last minute's nlay both sides scored again, making the' final Ot*go B Grade 12. Southland B Grade 6. , The Otago team was superior in all three thirds of the field, and deserved tho success attaching to its efforts. M, Roy was the most accurate of the forwards, hut nil three players (O. Ferguson, M. Roy. pnd A- Kay) showed good courtcraft. The centre third combined excellently. M. Cameron (throw-off), using to advantage the two wings. G. Macdonald and P. Mutimer.

South Otago's forward third proved to be its strong point, Miss F. South Otago, however, gradually increased their speed and outwitted Otago's movements. Their scoring was more accurate, and the final score was 10—4 in South Otago's favour.
