TABLE TENNIS

OTAGCT CHAMPIONSHIPS X A. ALGIE RETAINS TITLE WOMEN'S SINGLES TO MISS 'k > BENNETT ' R. A. Algie retained the men's singles title when he defeated W. Fogarty in the final at the Otago Table Tennis Championships on Saturday night. He lost only one set in the five games that he played, and gave a performance that augurs well for his • visit to Australia with the New Zealand team. He won the final in three straight sets. A new women's champion arose in Miss M Bennett, who defeated Miss E. Lock in the final in three sets. The title-holder, Mrs Monk, went out in the semi-final to Miss Bennett, who, right throughout the tournament, played table tennis of a high standard. ' ,S« large was the total of entries that it was found impossible to conclude the championships on Saturday night, even although eight tables, twice the number used on previous occasions, were in play from 7 o'clock until after midnight. The other events will be played out after the New Zealand championships at the end of this week There was a good crowd of. spectators in the Drill Hall and they were treated to some excellent exhibitions especially in the two singles finals. Algle proved himself to be in a elass, higher than any of the other competitors in the men's singles, and although Fogarty played well in the final.she was no match for his young opponent, who took the first three out of the scheduled five set match. Algie gave a brilliant display of driving, smashing and half-volleying and made some remarkable recoveries Fogarty endeavoured to force the pace, but he found his opponent too accurate and strong in all departments.- Algie won the first two sets 21-rlO. 21—9. but Fogarty did better in what proved to be the last set. He was down .7—lo and ,12—15 V but after that Algie went on to victory at 21—13 with an irresistible attack ','■■'■ "■:• ■■■ Miss Bennett played strongly, in the final of the Women's ..singles against an opponent who was very steady. Miss Lock won the'first set on her opponent's errors, but in the next two Miss Bertriett. forced the pace and hit many winners. Miss Lock does not strike very hard usually, but when she does she puts! them away accurately. Her opponent was just too strong for her.''' ' .«'' ,'■''' .
