THE GOVERNMENT AND GANGSTERDOM

TO THE EDITOR Sir,— The present Government, or at the least, the greater part of its members, still displays lack of brains, by again attempting to insult the intelligence of the community. These members want to stand up as "gangsters and bold men by severely commenting on the Banks of England and by threatening repudiation. Suddenly the thunder is stolen from them by the Opposition, which is ableNlo show that it is dangerous to talk carelessly. The "gangster" changes tune and colour, and attempts to sidestep the. responsibility by charging the Opposition with baseless suggestions. ~ • , We have here a sample of the actions of a section of the representatives of. the people, who do not realise their responsibility, and act without consideration. Brains and ability were never, developed by the simple ability to talkfrom a soap box and make promises; The voters are making a mental resolution that is more strongly in evidence every day. What use to any country is a Government in session, which can only " pat its friends on the back or throw mud at the Opposition all day long, without any attempt at legislation apart from what is arranged by Order-in-Council, etc. I agree with your correspondent of this morning, who is amused when the, Government members find fault with the paying of interest while they may themselves be very decidedly interested in " loan and finance' which charges very low rates—averaging up; to 40 per cent, and higher, according to amount and terms.—l am, etc., August 12.
