WHIPPET RACING

WINNER OF THE SHERMAN CUP The Dunedin Whippet Racing Club held its monthly meeting on Saturday at Tahuna Park. There was a large programme of 27 races contested, and some thrilling finishes were witnessed by the large gathering of spectators. The Otago Championship for the Sherman Cup was won by W. Winchester's Buck's Bjead. Tamerlane, owned by W. Guthrie, was successful in the Lloyd Cup race. Christchurch took away the Blue Pepper Hurdle Cup, Mr B. Brio's Chief Ruler being the winner. This dog also won the Second Class Hurdle Race. Dogs competed from all parts of the South Island, coming from as far afield as Reefton, West Coast. The visiting owners were Messrs T. W. Moyle, F. M. Sara and W. Christie (from Reefton); Mrs J. H. Falcon and Messrs J. H. Falcon, D. G Withell. J. J. Cronin, B Briggs and C. F. Bunting <from Christchurch); Messrs F. C. Clecketts. H. Reay, L. Raynor and B. Bowins (from Invercargill); Mrs T. H. Fraser (from Milton). The track were in good order and the weather was fine. There were 511 dogs at the meeting, which constitutes a record for the club. Credit is due to the stewards controlling the meeting, the races being despatched promptly. Sherwill's Gin Sling (scr) 2, Mrs T H. Fraser's Cock Robin (scr) 3. Also started: Javelin (scr) and Sir Clifton (scr) Won by a head each way. Time, 11 l-ssec. Second heat: C. N. Unwin s Hot Luck (scr) 1, F. M. Sara's All Spirits (scr) 2, Z. Rayner'si Rolling Home (scr) 3. Also started: Mountain Glory '(scr) and Stella Charm (scr). Won easily all ths way. Rolling Home being a length and a-half behind AH Spirits. Time. 10 4-ssec. Final: Hot Luck 1, Special Edition 2, All Spirts 3. Also started: Boiling Home, Gin ' Sling and Cock Robin. Hot Luck went to the front from the gun. and. staving off a strong challenge from Special Edition, went on to win by half a length. All Spirits was close up a head away third. Time, Usee.

Won by a head, with a head between second and third. Time. 10 4-5 sec. Second heat: J. H. Falcon's Cheetah (scr) 1, W. Winchester's Buck's Head (scr) 2. T. W. Moyle's Mora Shadow (scr) 3. Also started: Clifton Prince (scr). Won by a head, with Mora Shadow a length and a-half away third. Time. 10 4-ssec. Third heat: P. McKinlay's Phantom Gold (scr) 1. W. Guthrie's Tamerlane (scr) 2. W. Easson's Snowdrift (scr) 3. Also started: Irish Paddy (scr). Won by a head, with a similar distance between second and third. Time, Usee. Final: Buck's Head 1, Phantom Gold 2, Cheetah 3. Also started: Night Queen. Tamerlane and Blue Vision. All the dogs kept in line until near the winning post, when Buck's Head got his nose in front, and, maintaining his advantage, flashed across the line a winner just by a nose from Phantom Gold, with Cheetah a head away third, the other three finalists being heads away. Buck's Head, by winning the Sherman Cup. is the Otago champion whippet for the 1939 season. Time, llsec.
