Election Dates - \ • At Wednesday night’s meeting of the O.U.S.A. Executive the dates fprv the Students’ Association elections were decided upon. Noininations. . will- close on. Thursday, September 14, and on the following Tuesday:, the Critic will publish these alongwith details: of the qualifications of each, candidate. On Thursday and Friday, September 21 and 22, polling will take place for the positions of president, lady vice-president, and;-= man vice-president, and, finally, the; ; remaining positions on the execulive will be decided by ballot at the spring general meeting of the Students’ Council on Thursday, Septerriber 28. Mr O’Callaghan Returns ; A Mr M. G. O’Callaghan, who, with '"' Mr J. B. Aimers, of Wellington, has.,: been on a debating tour of Australian universities, returned to Dunedin on Tuesday last. In addition to taking part in nearly 20 debates and giving even more than that number of lectures, mainly on-the subject of New Zealand, Mr O’Callaghan has acquired a vast store of information about Australia, and wifi undoubtedly be able to supply his fellow-students with many new ideas, particularly on the . administrative side. Tramping Club The University Tramping Club is exploring the possibility of organising a trip during the coming vacation, and is inviting those interested . to communicate with the secretary of the club. The projected expedition would take place from August 18-25 inclusive, the destination being the' Matukituki Valley, near Lake Wanaka. Photographic Competition The Ski Club is not confining its intense activity merely to ski-ing, but is now sponsoring a photographic competition. The subjects, however, are restricted within' the range of the club’s interests, for, three separate prizes are offered,one for the best ski-ing action photograph, one for the best snowscape,. and one for the best coloured photograph which includes snow or mountain scenery. ~ Harrier Representatives The following is the team chosen by the Otago University Harrier Club to defend its title at the forth- : coming New Zealand University cross-country championships .at, Auckland: —R. S. Anderson, A. C. A. Coorobes, T. E. Dorman, J. W. Mandenp, R. G. Pilling and W. A. Russell. Mining-Dental Battle Next Wednesday will see .once again the stalwarts of the Mining , and Dental Faculties marching out to defend their honour on the foot- , ball field. The trophy contended for is far from imposing, but the fixture is nevertheless one of the most interesting interfaculty engagements of the year. A combined dance will follow in Allen Hall. Rostrum Arrives The first issue of Rostrum, published by the New Zealand University Students’ Association, arrived from Christchurch on Thursday, and is now available for distribution. Fencing Tournament The annual fencing contest between the Canterbury College and Otago University Swords Clubs will take olace to-night in Marama Hall at 7.30 p.ni. Blues Committee The executive at its last meeting confirmed the appointment of Drs D. W. Carmalt Jones and A. R. Andrew, Miss M. Fleming, and Mr r A. K. Ibbotson as graduate mem- .-., hers of the 1939 Blues Committee, while at a meeting last night Messrs T. Berghan and C. H. Baird were appointed to represent the sports clubs. Annual Drive Begins Those who take an interest in the ■■ administration of the various aspects of student life and whose academic activities are thereby restricted during the . first, half of the university year, have now begun to concentrate more strenuously on their studies, with the result.that a com- ■ parative calm has settled over the university.
