THE C.J.C. MEETING

TO-DAY’S HELDS REVIEWED

<F*om Our Special Reporter) CHRISTCHURCH. Aug. 11. „ The weather does not look at all favourable for the concluding dav of the Grand National meeting. The rain which set in to-day will soften the going at Riccarton. and if it continues overnight will tend to unset the form displayed in much firmer ground on the first two days of the meeting. A most disappointing feature of the final card Is the uaucltv of the fields for the Lincoln Steeples and Sydenham Hurdles. The fields for the flat races are quite good, and provide plenty of scone for the operations of punters. The interest in the Longbeach Handicap will be lessened by the fact that it will be run in divisions, but the change in going may lead to a reduction. enabling it to become one field, hence the draw for position becomes a most important factor when considering the race as a betting proposition. A number appear to have a chance. The Sandwlchman appears amongst those engaged in the Styx Hurdles, and will infuse extra interest in the race.

An excellent field appears in the Heathcote Handicap, and the betting will probably take a wide spread, with support for Lowenberg Ned Cuttle. Lady Montana. Tidewaiter. Dictate, and Settlement, and Balmenter must be granted a good chance, as he not only acts well in heavy going, but is also nicely treated on form with Lowenberg Settlement and Tidewaiter.

Assuming that Bridegroom is a better horse than handicapped, he should give Slayer hard work in the Lincoln Steeples. The meeting will be concluded with a good field for the Selwyn Handicap. 'it it may be reduced from its present strength, as Dictate and Spanish Lad are also engaged in the Heathcote Handicap. Despite his big weight, Majority will be fancied, as he acts well in heavy going, and the same remark applies to his stable mate. Ned Cuttle, who is engaged in th£ Heathcote Handicap. The following may be amongst those fancied for their engagements:— Aylesbury Steeples.—Ei Caballo. Hanover. Longbeach Handicap Montessa. Rex Maitland, Kaiwaka. and Lady Tinkle, or King Gustavo if run in divisions.

Sydenham Hurdles.—Aussie Ra. King Rey.

Styx Hurdles.—The Sandwichman. Begorrah. Dividend. Heathcote Handicap.—Ned Cuttle. Lady Montana Balmenter. or Tidewaiter,

Lincoln Steeples.—Bridegroom. Redcliffs Handicap.—Windsor Chief. Dranoel. The Wrecker. Selwyn Handicap.—Majority. Mishna. Dictate, or Toolev Street. The fields arc as follows; 11,32- , AYLESBURY STEEPLECHASE, Of £3OO. About two miles and a-half.

LONGBEACH HANDICAP, Of £3OO. Six furlongs.

SYDENHAM HURDLE HANDICAP. Of £6OO. Two miles.

1.37STYX HURDLE HANDICAP. Oi £3OO. One mile and three-quarters.

2.22 HEATHCOTE HANDICAP, Of £450. Nine furlongs.

3.7UNCOLN STEEPLECHASE, Of £7OO. About three miles.

Imported Colt The Papyrus—Tan-Belle colt, who arrived at Auckland from England last week, is owned by Mr T. Coltman. of Wellington, and he will go -into the stable of H. Telford at Trentham, I Brother to Vintage

Scarteen, who made his first public appearance in the Cashmere Rlate at Riccarton on Tuesday, is a full-brother to Vintage. H e is a well-grown three-year-old. but he will require more time yet. Catalogue

After Catalogue’s success in his third Winter Cup at Riccarton on Tuesday, his connections announced that, all going well, he would make another trip shortly to Victoria to contest the Melbourne Cup again. His weight this year is 9.0, equal fourth top with Round Up and Mosaic. Defaulter has 9.5. Profitable Trips

Mr J. A, Hennah, Padishah’s owner, has now made seven trips to Riccarton, each time with only one horse, and he has won at least one race on every trip. Mr G. Murray-Aynsley The well-known Ripcarton ownertrainer. G. Murray-Aynsley. was present at the Riccarton races on Thursday for the first time for about 18 months. He did not see this years Grand National, but claims to have witnessed 57 of the last 59. Improving Jumper

Slayer has now won four steeplechases for Mr L. C. Hazlett (three since he joined P. T, Hogan’s stable), and with place money has made himself the best bargain of recent months. The Valkyrian gelding is not very big. but he is a sound stayer and an improving jumper, and as he is one of the youngest ’chasers in commission more should bq heard of him. >" ‘

North Island Successes V." North Island horses have had a great innings at Riccarton this week. On Grand National Day they won five races, and on Thursday won five and participated in the dead-heat in a sixth. Their wins included both Grand Nationals and the Winter Cup. Requires Plenty of Room Mute did not nut a toe wrong when, starting from the limit, he led all the way on the opening day at Addington but he gave a very mixed display when required to race in the midd.le of the field on Wednesdav Apparently he is one of the kind which requires plenty of daylight. Loyal Direct Loyal Direct was one of the finds of the season in the Auckland province, registering five wins and eight placings. The Grattan Loyal mare raced in the interests of Mr George McNickle. whose previous representatives. Alexis. Parochial and Nawton Parrish, were all winners. He also trains Double Peter. Loyal Direct may continue to pay her way. Fine Art

By winning the King’s Handicap at Addington on Wednesday, Fine Art qualified for the New Zealand Trotting Cup, to be decided in November. It was an impressive victory, for, after starting smartly, he took the lead before two furlongs had been covered, and held it to the finish. Three furlongs from home Colonel Grattan raced up to him, but by the time the straight was reached Colonel Grattan began to tire, being obviously short of sufficient work. This marked Fine Art’s tenth win, and he has also been 11 times second and five times third. His stake earnings total £3022. He is ond of the most promising pacers in the Dominion, and will more than hold his own in select classes in November PAKURANGA HUNT MEETING ACCEPTANCES FOR NEXT SATURDAY (Per United Press Association) AUCKLAND, Aug. 11.
