WORLD PEACE

LABOUR PACIFISTS ' REBUKED MR CHAMBERLAIN'S POLICY UPHELD (From Our Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, Aug. 10. “ The pacifist attitude of the Government warps members’ view of what Mr Chamberlain is doing and it would be advisable and in good taste to refrain from criticising him in this House,” said Mr W. P. Endean (Opposition, Remuera) during the Financial debate in the House of Representatives to-day “I wonder if the people on the Labour side of the House know what a great load of responsibility rests on the shoulders of Mr Chamberlain." Mr Endean said. He referred to the pacifist attitude of Mr W. J. Jordan, the New Zealand High Commissioner in London, who, he said, had expressed the view that if he had his way never a man nor a ship would leave New Zealand in the event of war.

Mr T. H. McCombs (Govt. Lyttelton): You cannot prove it.

Mr Endean: I have witnesses who heard it on the Auckland wharf. Dr D. G, McMillan (Govt. Dunedin West): Eavesdroppers!

Mr Endean referred to the horrors of modern warfare, particularly aerial attacks on cities, and said that Mi Chamberlain was striving for peace, “I feel sure that if we knew all the facts we would take off our hats to him and tell him that he has put off war and that he may be able to put it off for good," Mr Endean added. “ It seems to me that if civilisation is to be maintained we must encourage Mr Chamberlain to go on and try to keep the' peace of the world.”
