OLD TELEGRAPH OFFICE

HOUSING FOR SOCIAL SECURITY ALTERATIONS TO INTERIOR Work is steadily progressing in the transformation of the old Telegraph and Customshouse buildings into the headquarters of the Social Security Department. Only necessary alterations are being made to give the department adequate and suitable housing and renovations are also being carried out. Externally, the changes will not be great and the entrances will be from the steps at the comer and the Customshouse frontage as in the old buildings. Inside, the telegraph office has been enlarged by the removal of a wall, and this large space will be the main public office, with counters and tellers’ boxes. At the rear of this, formerly occupied by the operating room, will be the chief clerk’s office, four small interview rooms, and clerical space. Behind this again will be the records room. Half of the ground floor of the old Customs House which adjoins will be sub-divided for the accommodation of the district registrar, medical officers, typists, etc., and a portion of the first floor will be subdivided for the clerical staff.
