A TRIPLE DEAD HEAT

♦♦♦- FINISH OF ISLINGTON HANDICAP LOWENBERG, SETTLEMENT, AND TDEWAITER PADISHAH WINS THE HURDLES

(From Our Special Reporter) CHRISTCHURCH. Aug. 10. The Grand National Hurdle card ; was got oft in comparatively fine weather but there was always a bit of a sting in the atmosphere. The track continued to provide good., firm going, and a large attendance again had the pleasure of participating in spin* very interesting racing. , The very great feature of the day consisted in Padishah completing a double that has not been achieved in the long history attached to the Grand National meeting. Padishah was handled with perfect horsemanship by A. E. Ellis, and so was Aussie Ra. Charade was probably asked to beat King Rey too soon, and the latter beats himself by being a hard puller. Padishah did not spoil his hurdling hy racing over fences, and he really won well. It was a very popular win, dnd Mr J. A. Hennah. the owner and trainer, and A. E. Ellis came in dor sincere congratulations on the success. Slayer scored a meritorious success In the Beaufort Steeples, ns he stayed on well under his weight, and the horsemanship was a big factor in the success. Slayer slightly hooked the second 'of the Kennels double and dipped. He was allowed to get balanced again and saved six or seven lengths ’by cutting the. corner to. the last jump, where he had just, about reached Hanover, who had carried the field along. Slayer, when vigorously

Hurdles, and after crossing a couple of hurdles was a good dozen lengths clear of Charade. At the stand hurdle King Rey .vas racing three lengths in front of Charade and Aussie Ra with the others handy, bar Disturbed. King Rey led into the back from Charade, Aussie Ra, and Padishah. Charade went up to King Rey about six furlongs from home, and they led Aussie Ra and Padishah round the top, with the others out of it. Coming to the final hurdle. Padishah, Charade, and Aussie Ra were racing in close order, and King Rey had commenced to fade. Padishah was first to land, and then came on to record the most notable success ever scored in connection with the Grand National meeting by beating Aussie Ra by two lengths. Charade was another two lengths away, and a dozen lengths in front of King Rey. Spreydon Hurdles Chat started a short-priced favourite for the Spreydon Hurdles, but tipped out at the stand hurdle, where In the Dark also came down. Round Score was out in front with Jewish Lad, but the former failed to survive the hurdle at the five-furlong post. Begorrah was in charge coming round the top with Jewish Lad, and they came to the last hurdle in company. Begorrah then drew out to win by four lengths from Tutor, who made up ground to beat Jewish Lad by two lengths. McHeath was a bad fourth.

called .on for a final effort, responded gamely and managed to beat Hanover by a neck. ' , Something unique in the history .of racing occurred in connection with the Islington Handicap. About six yards from home Lowenberg and Balmenter had taken charge, when Tidewaiter ana Settlement, who had been running last as they turned for home, arrived on the scene, and. a great finish home resulted in the judge failing to separate the first three, with Balmenter close up. Efforts, to recall a similar occurrence naturally aroused a lot of interest. but one could not he found, a triple dead-heat did occur at .Forbury Park in the old days when the Dundip Club occupied the historic course. The writer has come across it in the records, and from memory can only recall that Huntingdon was one of the participants N Hunt Cup Steeples El. Caballo and Glenvane dropped out of the Hunt Cup. and Bridegroom started a short odds-on chance. Bridegroom and Tomcat came on together to the stand double. Tomcat came down at the first fence, and Red Terror and Panara followed suit. This left Bridegroom well clear of Nightwind. and the former cantered the balance of the course to win by about a furlong. Red Terror was remounted, but after crossing Cutts’ fence, refused at th« sod wall. Tomcat then reappeared and came along with Red Terror. They jumped the sod wall together. and in the run home Tomcat omstayed Red Terror and beat him bv a neck amidst applause from the spectators. Summer Handicap Indian Sun started favourite for the Summer Handicap, and, after being well placed all the way, suffered interference when finishing with Windsor Chief. Dranoel. and Wagner, and Windsor Chief went in on Indian Sun in the last 100 yards and then came on to win by a length from Wagner, who beat Dranoel by a head. Indian Sun was half a length away, with The Wrecker. Aurora’s Star. Little Robin, and Brilliant Boa following. Captain Bruce. Comus. and Hunting Chorus were well placed in the early stages, but then dropped back. Beaufort Steeples Slayer started a strong order for the Beaufort Steeples, in which Hanover set the pace from Gold Wren. Slayer, and El Caballo. who. were racing together well clear of Manawatu. Hanover was 10 lengths clear going into Cutts’s fence, but racing along the back they were closing on the leader except Manawatu. who was still well out of it, Hanover led over the kennels doubJe. where Slayer made a slight mistake at the second leg and dropped back. Hanover was still three lengths clear going into the second last jump. He was then taken a bit wide, whilst Slayer saved a lot of ground bv cutting the comer. In the run home Jenkins outrode Mcßae on Hanover and won by a neck. Gold Wren was over a dozen lengths away third, and the others were easing up. Woolston Handicap Kaiwaka was a strong paddock tip for the Woolston Handicap, and started a good favourite. Boloyna began well and led out from Kaiwaka, Muriet. Rex Maitland, and a field that quickly spread over a good deal of ground. Boloyna le* 4 Kaiwaka and Muriet round the ton and into the straight. At the distance Kaiwaka got on terms with Boloyna, and in a good finish the former won bv a head. Rex Maitland was three lengths away just beating Gay Hunting for a place. Flame Queetl was close up next, followed by Gold Salute. Le Toquet. Prince Ruenalf. and Muriet. Grand National Hurdles King Rey at once pulled his way to the front in the Grand National

Islington Handicap Silver Slipper, Liane, and Lowenberg were the early leaders, and Night Dress, after being well up, dropped right back. Silver Slipper, Liane, and LOv/enberg were in charge at the far turn, where Settleme it and Tidewaiter were running last. The leadership was; unchanged at the turn for home. Once well into the straight Balmenter joined the leaders, and then Tidewaiter and Settlement appeared on the scene. A great race home resulted in a dead heat between three, with Balmenter close up, and then came Valantua, Kena. and Nightdress. August Handicap Another close and exciting finish concluded the card for the day. Haughty Winner wore Mishna and Tooley Street down to win by a short neck, with the third horse half a length away. Then came Ruling Spi, Mittie, and Norseman. Black Thread, Strip, Straightdell, Mittie, and Grey Honour, who were prominent at different stages of the earlier part of the race, faded, and Counterblast, after being one of the first to show, dropped back inside the first furlong. RACING NEWS By Sentinel FIXTURES August 12.—Grand National meeting. August 19.—Pakuranga Hunt. August 31.—Egmont-Wanganui Hunt. September 2.—Taranaki Hunt. September 2.—Otago Hunt. September 7. 9—Wanganui J.C, September 16.—Foxton R.C. September 16.—Ashburton R.C. September 10 18.—Avondale J.C. Sentember 21 23.—Geraldine R.C. September 23.—Marton J.C. September 30.—Otaki-Maor J.C. Raana A five-year-old entire horse, Raana is a bay son of Hunting Song and the Prince Wilonyx—Edna May II mare Rautorea, and he is thus very closely related to that good horse and sire, Pink Coat, who was by Hunting Song out of a half-sister to Rautorea. He carries the colours of his breeder, Mr D. J. Barry, of Gisborne, for whom he is trained by J. W. Nixon. Araboa Araboa, now eight years old, is a light-framed chestnut son of Balboa and the Some Boy II mare Lady Winton, who has a very short known pedigree, and he is owned by his breeders, Messrs P. and R. Butel of Arrowtown, for whom he is trained by A. E. Didham. Not racing till a late four-year-old, he was a useful horse on the flat* and was a winner in open class at the Grand National meeting last August. Catalogue’s Record Not only has Catalogue won the Cup three times, but he also holds the mile record for the course, which he registered in the Jockey Club Handicap two years ago. He has now won £11,954 in stakes for 13 wins and 23 minor placings in 84 starts to date. Totalisator Turnovers The turnover of £67,149 at Riccarton on Tuesday, bordered closely on the highest amounts handled on Grand National Day since the race was decided at Riccarton. The biggest turnover was in 1920, when £72,844 went through the machine. £72,528 was handled on the second day, and £68,102 (wet weather) on the third day, making a total for the meeting of £213,475. In the following year the figures were £69,608, £65,069, and £72,647, total £207,324. Last year the grand total was £171,716, made up of £61,098 10s. £44,595 10s, and £66,022.

Only Three Races Nigger Boy has had only three races to date. The first was in the John Grigg Stakes at Ashburton in September, the first two-year-old race of the season in the South Island, and in that event he finished fourth after being in front early. Then he was set aside and reappeared to win the Maiden Stakes easily at the Christchurch Hunt Meeting 10 days ago. He is a browri gelded half-brother by Nigger Minstrel to Spanisn Lad, being out of the Greyspear mare Spearmaid, who descends from imported Lady Bevys, and he is owned by his breeder, Mr H. J. Riddle, of the Western District, Southland, for whom he is now trained by R. McNay at Riccarton. For his first race he was trained by F. Shaw at Wingatui.

The Two Big Jumps The first National Steeplechase winner to start in the Grand National Hurdles was Levanter (1897), who missed place. In 1903 Awahuri and in 1904 Slßw Tom fared no better as hurdlers. Paritutu and Bercola were the next steeplechase winners to essay the double, with a similar lack of success. There was a lapse of some years before a cross-country winner. Beau Cavalier, tackled the hurdles without result. Then came Aurora Borealis, who beat all the hurdlers except Carinthia; and Clarion Call, first and third.

The Eclipse Stakes ■ Lord Rosebery’s picture colt Blue Peter landed the odds laid on him in the Eclipse Stakes at Sandown Park on July 14 (says an English writer), bringing his stake winnings for the season to date to £31,964. There were some visitors to Esher who professed disappointment with the manner in which Blue Peter scored. To my mind the performance was eminently satisfactory. The way in which the colt roused himself to deal with the late challenge of Glen Loan proved to me conclusively that he has stamina as well as speed. He will get the 1 St. Leger distance without a doubt and Pharis will have to be very good indeed to lower the colours of our champion. Blue Peter is a lazy colt, and many great horses have had a similar trait. When he had taken the lead from the pace-making Challenge, the chestnut no doubt thought that the need for real exertion was over. He had taken nothing out of himself up to that point. Upon being reminded that a further effort was wanted he responded as only a highrdass horse could have done. The length and a-half by .which he won would have been greatly extended had there been another furlong to travel. Challenge settled down to make the running at just a nice gait. Landaff and Scottish Union being in attendance, just in front of Disney and Blue Peter, with Glen Loan as whipper-in. Smith was in no hurry with Blue Peter. He did not move up more than two places before the straight was reached and then he kept to the centre of the track. Challenge held on to the lead for the next two furlongs. Glen Loan improving when the favourite did. When Disney dropped away Blue Peter drew ahead of his stable companion. A furlong and a-half from home Glen Loan came to him with such giant strides that Smith was compelled to draw his whip, so lazily was Lord Roteberv’s chestnut running. At one time he could not have been more than a neck in front of Mrs Murray’s big four-year-old, but. Smith continuing to swing his whip. Blue Peter ran on courageously enough to win very cleverly indeed. OTAGO HUNT CLUB MEET AT GREEN ISLAND Weather permitting, the Otago Hunt Club will hold its weekly meet at Green Island to-morrow afternoon over properties kindly placed at its disposal bv Messrs G. Kerr, G. McLeod and W. Pryde. The last hunt held over those properties proved very popular, and if the weather is fine another large turnout is expected. A good view of practically the whole hunt may be obtained from Mr Pryde’s property on the left-hand side of the road. Followers will meet at the junction of the Brighton and Main South roads at 2.15 p.m.

Battlefield in the Belgium Handicap at Addington. When first put into training the highpriced imported horse showed unusual promise, and it Is possible that in J. Bryce’s hands he is about to make belated fulfilment of it. Had Every Chance Nelson Eddy was proclaimed unbeatable at Addington, but at present the four-year-old crack does not seem ready for a two-mile trip in the company he has to meet. He had every chance on Wednesday, but was beaten three furlongs from home. Headed for Best Class •Marsceres enhanced his reputation by his second to Fine Art in the King’s Handicap. He made a slight tangle at the start, but thereafter he paced a particularly sound race and promises to reach the best class before long. Found Opening Too Late Great Divide confirmed the good opinion already formed of him when he defeated Token in the Speedway Handicap at Addington, but the latter might have done still better had he been able to find an opening sooner. Improvement in Times The excellent order of the track at Addington on Wednesday is illustrated in the following table showing the winners, their assessments, handicaps, and improvement made:— One mile and a-quarter
