“New Zealand in its favoured situation and with its need for greater population is lagging far behind in what it might offer to do for refugees,” said the Rev. J. D. Smith, when the Auckland Presbytery was considering the reception of a refugee pastor from the Confessional Church in Germany. “I have felt ashamed of our authorities," he continued, “that they have not taken a stronger attitude in offering a refuge in a more generous way to these persecuted people,”
