LOCAL AND OVE-RSEAS MARKETS

NORTHERN EXCHANGES ' AUCKLAND

INVERGARGILL MARKETS VALUES GENERALLY POOR NO DEMAND FOR LOCAL POTATOES (Special to Daily Times) INVERCARGILL, Aug. 8. The produce markets generally are quiet, but more activity will probably take place next month, when the farmers* demand for oats and seeds should begin. •• . Oats.—There is no quotable change in the oats market. The demand .for shipping is dull, and of lines offering only an occasional one appeals to the millers. Values to growers still range from 2 S to 2s 3d a bushel, o.t.cs.. forgrade oats, arid Is 8d to is Hd for under grade. Wheat.—The values to growers for the current month 10. b., Bluff, are 5s 8d for Tuscan varieties. 6s for Hunters, and 6s 2d for Velvet. These prices are subject to a bonus of a minimum of 3d a. bushel at the end of the season. Fowl wheat is still dull of sale, and the value for g.w.f. quality is about 4s 9d a bushel, o.t.cs. The chaff market is well supplied, and business is dull. Value to growers for good, bright quality is £3 10s a ton, o.t.cs.- • ' .••■' Ryegrass.—This is being dealt with mainly on farmers' accounts after the seed has-been dressed and after germination is known. The.greater part. of the production is showing low germination percentages, arid is difficult to sell; but lines showing germination of 80 per cent, or more are commanding good:, prices. , Values range from 5s 8d to 7s 6d for dressed-seed of- more than 70 ; : per cent, to over 90 per cent, , For poorer germinating lines; prices are, considerably lower, while lines of under 50 per cent.; germination are most' difficult to sell. Browntop.-rrThereisno improvement in this market and there is an entire lack of overseas orders. Values to growers for machine-dressed seed are about Is 2d per lb for certified and a penny less for uncertified. Potatoes.—Value to growers is about £l4 a ton, o.t.cs., for all varieties. The shipping market, however, has shown a tendency to ease because of the Government being prepared to issue licences for the importation of ootatoes frorri California. These- on current quotations can be landed in the North x lsland at little more than £l6 a ton and, as a consequence, the demand- for local potatoes has weakened. Choicest salted was selling at 119 s to 120 s per cwt, or a shade lower than a week before. Retail prices- were unchanged, New Zealand remaining at Is 3d per lb and Danish at Is 4d»per lb. As a result of lower exports from the Dominion, stocks of New Zealand butter in London are now becoming short. During last week stored stocks were reduced by a further 828 tons and the total now held is only 3546 tons, compared with 6765 tons at the same period last year. On the other hand, stocks of Australian butter at 6903 tons are over 2000 tons higher than a year ago. In anticipation of increased supplies of eggs and to stimulate the demand, wholesale prices for eggs were reduced this morning on the quotations published last Monday. The revised wholesale prices in Wellington as from today and until next Wednesday will be as follows: : —Specials, 2s 4d per dozen; A grade. 2s 3d; B grade, 2s Id; ducks, 2s 3d. These quotations show a reduction of 5d a dozen on specials and 4d a dozen on other grades. The distributors generally, it is understood, have undertaken to maintain the new prices for a full week and by making the reduction on a Wednesday have been guided by the interests of the retailer as well as by the convenience of consumers in freer buying at the week-end. CLUTHA RIVER GOLD COMPANY PAYS 6* PER CENT. PROFIT OF £14,837 REALISED EARNSCLEUGH FLATS TO BE WORKED (From Our Own Correspondent) LONDON, July 17. A profit of £14,837 was realised by Clutha Gold Dredging, Ltd., last year, a final dividend of H per cent., making 6£ per cent, for the year, less tax, was declared at the annual meeting today. The chairman (Colonel C. E. Ponsonby) announced that dredging in the river was to stop in August or September, and that it would begin on the Earnscleugh Flats above Alexandra bridge as soon as the river was low enough to enable the dredge to proceed there. . ~ In his address, the chairman said that the output of gold during the year amounted to 79240 z, an average of 1520 z per week. The proceeds, less New Zealand gold tax of 10 s sterling per oz and the selling charges, amounted, to £49,913. Expenditure, in New Zealand amounted to £20.665, an average of approximately £4OO per week. Expenditure in England was £2Oll. After providing £5872 for national defence contribution and British and New Zealand income tax, and £7339 for depreciation, the profit for the year was £14,837. The company's financial position was thoroughly sound. . , , The length of the river worked during the year was one mile 24 chains, making a total of 2 miles 31 chains dredged. Referring to the Earnscleugh Flats, Colonel Ponsonby said that the areas had been tested by close boring; 395 bores had been put down, proving approximately 54,000,000 cubic yards of a value over 6d per cubic yard, taking gold at 140 s per fine oz, and after heavily discounting all rich bores. Working costs, including the New Zealand tax on gold produced, were estimated at aproximately 2Jd per cubic yard. The land was a valuable asset, and the board had been faced with the problem of deciding on the best method of working it. Different Points Considered

Before deciding to work the flats, the board had considered various points of view. It had agree* that :t was not an opportune time to raise fresh capital to install a new dredge. The existing dredge had fulfilled expectations, and it had been able to deal with rocks and heavy ground. It had worked out the top section of the river quicker than anticipated, and had now almost reached the top boundary. "After carefully considering all the factors and on the strong recommendation of the company's representatives and the general manager in New Zealand, the board has arrived at the conclusion that the interests of the company will be best served by proceeding with as little delay as possible to work the flats with the existing dredge, further dredging of the river being postponed till a later date,", said the chairman. , .■■'«. "This means a change from the original programme, but the board is confident that the advantages to be gained fully justify the change. The programme whereby the existing dredge will be altered and transferred to the flats has been designed with the view of increasing the output of gold without raising further capital. Our general manager reports that we can expect from the flats not only reasonably good, but more consistently regular" outputs than from ,the river. ■ . "It is intended to step dredging in the river next month or in September, as soon as the river is low enough to allow of the dredge being moved upstream under the Alexandra bridge. It will work its way into the flats where the alterations necessary to ertable it to deal with the new conditions will be carried out. "The chief alterations entail increasing the capacity from approximately 1,440,000 cubic yards to 2,400,000 cubic yards per annum, and installing an elevator and conveyor. It is anticipated that the cost of the alterations will be between £40,000 and £45,000, a sum within the company's resources. They are estimated to take upwards of six months, during which period there will be no outputs. "Although payment of dividends will therefore be interrupted during the changeover, the board has every reason to believe that the decision arrived at will ensure regularity of outputs and steady returns. The gold in the river will still be available for recovery after the flats are worked out.v Replying to questions, Colonel Ponsonby said that the cost of a new dredge would be between £150,000 and £200,000. The chance of buying the Molyneux dredge did not exist. It had not been offered; it would not be suitable for the flats MINING NEWS GREY RIVER RETURN (Peh United Press Association) WELLINGTON, Aug. 9.
