DEATH OF CRICKETER
MR TOM HAYWARD
LONDON, July 19. The death is announced of Tom Haywai'd, the Surrey cricketer.
Tom Hayward, a fine batsman and a much - respected px-ofessional cricketer, was born in 1871, so was 68 years of age at the time of his death. He was of the sound, orthodox type of bat, and gave splendid service to his county (Surrey) and to England. He played for Surrey for many years right up to the outbreak of war, and was invariably among the leading averages. He represented England 13 time? in all between 1896 and 1909, making two centuries (both in England) and two scores of 91 and 90 (both in Australia). Touring with McLaren’s team to Australia in 1901-2, Hayward was second in the averages for all matches with 47.60, and third in the test averages with 33.88. He again visited the Commonwealth in 1903-4, this time with Warner’s learn, and succeeded in topping the list for all matches with an average of 49.20. In test matches he was third with 36.66. He was mentor to J. B. Hobbs, afterwards England’s greatest batsman since W. G. Grace.
