CAMBRIDGE LEAVES LIVERPOOL Cabled advice has been received that the Federal steamer Cambridge left Liverponol last Saturday for Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, ami Dunedin. She is due at Auckland on August 24. NORTHUMBERLAND REPLACES OTAIO Tilt Federal Company has received advice that the Northumberland will now leave Liverpool on August 12 for Auckland, W'elliugton, Lyttelton, Dunedin, and piuff, in place of the motor-ship Otaio. She is due at Auckland on September 21 NARBADA AT CALCUTTA From Newcastle, via Java, the Union Company’s chartered steamer Narbada was duo at Calcutta on Sunday. She will load there and leave on August 2 for Penang, Singapore and Samarang, to complete loading for Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, Tlmaru, Dunedin, and Bluff. The vessel is due at Auckland about September 4. SUEZ CANAL TRAFFIC as was to he expected, the general falling off In trade during 1938 had a market effect upon the amount of traffic passing through the Suez canal (states the Syren and Shipping). The number of transits was 6171, with an aggregate net tonnage of 31,418,187, compared will) 6635 and 36,491,332 tons in 1937, while receipts from tines fell from £10,862,700 to £9,720,900. Another factor influencing the position was the absence of Italian military operations on a large scale, Italy’s traffic through the waterway declining from 5,866,087 tons to 4.625,818 tons. The British share of tire total movement was 50.4 per cent., represented by 17.357,743 tons, or more than 100,000 ions over the 1937 figure. Germany’s share was 3.131,597 tons (9.1 pur cent), Dutch 3,028,324 tons (8.8 per cent.), French 1,748.0119 tons, and Norwegian 1,474,000 tons. The cargo traffic showed a much bigger decline, the total being 28,779,000 tons, a decrease of 3.997,000 tons, or 12.2 per cent., compared with the 1937 result. The north to south movement fell off more particularly, reacting not only to the general economic situation but also to the loss suffered by seaborne commerce owing to the war In China. Russian exports via Suez, chiefly mineral oil, were down 25 per cent., the total outward shipments last year being only 208,000 tons.
