UNIVERSITY ACTIVITIES

Debating The annual interfaculty debate is to be held in the Otago University canteen on Wednesday next, when the draw will be as follows:—Home Science v. Law, Science v. Arts I. Arts II v. Medicine. Mr P O. Smellie will be the judge. On the results of this contest the Union Society will select the team to represent Otago University in the forthcoming Joynt Scroll contest, which is to be held in Dunedin on July 21. Six teams will be competing, re presenting Auckland. Massey Victoria. Canterbury, and Lincoln Colleges, ana Otago University. The subject se lected by the judtes. Protestor R. cawson, the Rev. W. Alien Sievely and Mr C. B. Barrowclough. is That education in New Zealand fan? to equip us for everyday life." The debate is to be held in His Majesty's Theatre and will be open to the public. The Science Debatinu Society adviseb that an inadvertent error occurred in last week's column, when it was announced that that body would debate against the Evangelical Union. Actually the constitution of the EvangelieaUnion forbids outside engagement:, under its name, and although the debate on '' Evolution " will be contested by three members of the uni.n—Messrs C. W. Warburton. G. Miller and Mor rison—it will not be officially contested bv the Evangelical Union.

At the recent Training College boxing match against Christchurch Train ing College, the issue depended on the last bout in which Dunedin took a decision that was open to question Tht result of the bout, however, sucress fully " knocked out" the University Dramatic Society which had engaged the Dunedin contestant (the winner by judge's decision) as the leader oi a dance band for its dance on Satur day evening After the contest thcloser proceeded (disgustedlv no doubt) to the college hall, (he winner pro ceeded to hospital, while the University Dramatic Society annoyed its natrons bv havine to resort to recorded music. Men's Basketball The University team met defeat on Tuesday evening at the hands of the leading team, Star running out winners bv an 11—6 margin. The game however, was marred by the presence of too much enthusiasm of a wrone kind. Memorials to be Shifted Permisson has been granted by the Students' Association for the removal of the following memorials:—The Ulrich tablet to be moved to the Mining School, and the Parker tablet to be placed in the biology department if convenient. Replacements To fill the vacancies caused by the resignation of Mr W. Thomson. Mrs Pinch has been appointed a member of the Finance. Rules. Canteen and Blues Committees, and as a student representative on the board of control N.Z.U. Blues New Zealand University blues have been awarded to the following Otago students for 1939: — Athletics. —R. G. Pilling, B. W. Nixon, J. L. Adams. I. L. Vosailagi. H. D. Ramsay. Swimming—J. H. Neville, J. C. W. Davies, C. C. Foote, Miss J. Eastgate, Miss J. Morice. Boxing.—M. Parr, R. Skelly. G. McFadzien, M. Andrew. Shooting—A. M. Cookson, R. W. Baker. Lawn Tennis.—C. H. Baird. Basketball.—Miss N. Thompson, Miss I. Hamlin. Rowing.—F. J. Cairns. J. N. Ramsay. A. N. White, B. H. R. Hill. Tournament Relic During the Easter tournament this year, the gong belonging to St. Margaret's College "did the disappearing trick." and has failed to make its reappearance. At its last meeting the Students' Association Executive assumed liability, and approved an appropriation to purchase a new gong. Medical History Society At the meeting of the society last Thursday talks were delivered by Dr C. M. Greenslade on "The History of the Cystoscope," and Mr A. M. Rutherford on "Sir William MacKenzie." Both talks were well received. Review The executive has appointed Mr N. V. Farrell as editor of the Review for 1939, with Mr E. R. Duncan and Miss C. M. Passmore as associate editors. Capping Prizes The Capping Committee has announced the following awards for this year's capping:— Procession. —Best college " stunt,' Knox College and Selwyn College (equal); best faculty "stunt," mining faculty. Capping Book.—Best student cartoon, Messrs Moore and Roger (equal): best article. Mr B. G. Hood. Australian Tour The N.Z.U.S.A. have released the list of subjects to be debated by the New Zealand team in Australia, which is as follows the side taken by New Zealand being given in brackets:—(l) "That the British public has been led up to the Berchtesgaden path " (affirmative) (2) "That we have more to learn than to fear from Fascism" (negative). (3) "That an adequate defence scheme for Australia and New Zealand is both impracticable and undesirable" (affirmative). (4) "That the daily newspapers fail to fulfil the true function of journalism " (affirmative). (5) "That higher education should be liberal rather than technical " (affirmative).

Student Refugees In regard to recent suggestions for the adoption of student refugees at Otago University, the executive of the Students' Association carried the following resolution at its last meeting:— (1) That Student Association fees could not nossiblv be drawn on for such a project. (2) That as members of the executive were, for various reasons not prepared to undertake the' launching of the scheme the only solution other than dropping it altogether was to consider approaching the S.C.M. to ascertain their views on organising the whole scheme.
